A public service radio cam-
paign addressed to "Jewish
losers" will begin soon to
urge Jews of child bearing
age to be screened for Tay-
Sachs disease.
Thousands of Jewish club
women from Bnai Brith, Jun-
ior Division of Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, ORT, Bnai
Brith Girls and the Women's
Guild of Sinai Hospital are
working to attract a record
turn-out at screenings to un-
earth hidden carriers of the
child-killing disease.
The screenings are sched-
uled for 10 .a.m. to 5 p.m.
Feb. 23 and March 2 at Cong.
Beth Achim.
The theme of "Jewish las-
ers" in the commercials is
based on the fact that Tay-
Sachs is a genetic disease
that most frequently strikes
Jewish infants. "A lottery
you're entered in . . . like it
or not . . ." if you are of
Central or Eastern European
Jewish heritage, as one com-
mercial states.
Tay-Sachs is caused by the
absence of the hormone called
"hex A." Without that hor-
mone the body cannot break
down fatty tissues which col-
lect in the brain. By the age
of six months an apparently
healthy infant begins to lose
control of its bodily functions;
over the next five years the
infant becomes helpless, goes
into a coma, is stricken blind,
and then dies.
There is no present treat-
ment or cure for Tay-Sachs
disease. In past screenings
more than 80 carriers were
discovered in the Detroit
area.
In addition to urging at-
tendance at Tay - Sachs
screenings, the women's or-
ganizations are also active in
providing the more than 200
volunteers who will coordin-
ate the actual screening pro-
grams along with medical
and technical personnel.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Sims
of Bnai Brith head the on-site
registration coordination, and
Mrs. Andrew Berger is serv-
ing as Tay-Sachs speaker's
bureau chairman.
Mrs. Alfred E. Lakin, chair-
man of volunteers, said a
minimum donation is being
requested of those being
screened, but that no one will
be turned away. Co-chairmen
of the Tay-Sachs Screening
Program of Metropolitan De-
troit are Doctors Ralph Cash
and Hyman S. Mellen of Si-
nai Hospital of Detroit. Dr.
Lester Weiss of Henry Ford
Hospital is scientific director.

Congressman James J.
Blanchard, Democrat from
the 18th District, has an-
nounced he is co-sponsoring
a bill to establish a national
program for the diagnosis,
control and prevention of Tay-
Sachs disease.
Rep. William M. Brodhead
(17th District) also is co-
sponsor of the legislation.
Congressman Blanchard
said, "too little is known
about this tragic killer of chil-
dren. We can and must de-
velop a program to alert the
public of the danger of this
disease. That is why I am co-
sponsoring this legislation."
He said the bill proposes
$500,000 for the collection and
dissemination of information
about Tay-Sachs. Secondly, it
would provide $2.5 million
for screening, counseling and
blood tests.
Blanchard said' that while
there is no known cure for
Tay-Sachs, screening can pre-

cases in the United States.
"Thus," Congressman
Blanchard concluded, "wide-
spread effective mass screen-
ing can eliminate most of the
high medical cost, unneces-
sary deaths and family suf-
fering which accompany this
dreaded disease."
One does not live on joy,
