JERUSALEM—"I wouldn't
choose this way of life if I
didn't believe Progressive
Judaism has a future in
Israel." This is the feeling
of 29-year-old Zeev Harari,
a Haifa-born Israeli.
Zeev grew up in Haifa and
attended the Leo Baeck ele-
mentary and high school
where he feels he was influ-
enced by its principal, a lib-
eral rabbi from Germany.
After finishing high school,
Zeev served from 1963-65 in
the army. Then he entered
Haifa University. There he
joined the Haifa Progressive
Congregation a n d became
very active in it. Later on,
Zeev also became active in
the Israeli National Progres-
sive Movement.
In the fall of 1972 the de-
cision was made and Zeev
entered the Hebrew Union
College in Jerusalem to study
for the rabbinate. In addi-
tion, he began work on a
master's degree in Hebrew
literature, specializing in
Middle Ages Jewish thought
and philosophy and rabbinic
literature, at the Hebrew
University.
Zeev hopes to complete his
studies in two to three years
but in the meantime he has
been serving bi-weekly for
the past two years as student
rabbi for a Progressive Con-
gregation in Nahariya.
Although there are ties
with the World Union of Pro-
gressive Judaism and affili-
ation with the American Re-
form movement, in Israel

Israel Bank Shows
Rise in Income
NEW YORK — Israel iDs-
count Bank Limited, the prin-
cipal subsidiary of I D B
Bankholding Corporation Ltd.,
reported a rise in consolidat-
ed net operating income for
the year ended Dec. 31, 1974,
to $9.7 million from $8.8 mil-
lion in 1973. Consolidated net
income, including non-recur-
ring income, was $12.4 mil-
lion compared with $8.9 mil-
lion the previous year.
A 10 percent increase in
consolidated net operating
income and consolidated as-
sets in terms of U.S. dollars
was achieved despite a 43
percent devaluation of the
Israel pound in relation to the
U.S. dollar in November 1974.

Planning a Party?
ism is used rather than Re-
form. In Israel, the move-
ment itself also is much
more traditional in practices
than the Reform movement
in America.
Progressive Judaism actu-
ally was started in Israel by
Liberal rabbis from Ger-
many in the 1930s. There
were congregations in Haifa,
Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, but
as the years passed, they did
not become Israeli and re-
mained "Yekish landsman-
shaft." Explains Zeev, "They
couldn't break through or
into Israeli society. The so-
cialist society with its ideol-
ogy of living Zionism was
not compatible with Reform
Judaism and it could not take
root."
A new wave of rebuilding
the Progressive movement
was begun in 1958 and today
there are 10 Progressive con-
gregations throughout t h e
country — two each in Jeru-
salem and Tel Aviv and
others in Ramat Gan,. Beer-
sheva, Natany a, Haifa,
Nahariya and Upper Naza-
reth. In all there are perhaps
several thousand members,
the majority of whom are
native Israelis. Some congre-
gations also have youth
groups with a total of be-
tween 200 and 300 youth in-
volved.
Zeev has strong hopes that
Progressive Judaism in Is-
rael will be given "its
rights." Non-Orthodox (i.e.,
Reform a n d Conservative)
rabbis have no rabbinical
rights in Israel and are not
recognized by the state. They
cannot perform marriages,
burials, conversions, e t c .
They can only work with
congregations in conducting'
services, Bar Mitzvas, or do-
ing educational and youth
work.
"There is no one way of
Judaism. Throughout Jewish
history, it has always been
pluralistic and still is. Yet in
Israel, Judaism is very much
identified with political re-
ligious parties and most Is-
raelis feel it is in fact
monopolized by these politi-
cal parties.
The average non-Orthodox
Israeli thinks there is only
one way — to observe all or
nothing. By choosing a non-
Orthodox way, I have an op-
portunity to show an alterna-
tibe to the 'all or nothing,
way of practicing Judaism.
Judaism is an everlasting
process of evolution. T h e
government should recognize
that there are other ways
and these must be given
their rights."
