Local ADL Supports Hiring
Policy of Southfield Schools

Robert H. Naftaly, chair-
person of the Michigan Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith, announced that organi-
zation's support for the re-
cently adopted employment
policy of the Southfield Pub-
lic. Schools. Passage of the
policy sparked a recall peti-
tion drive against four of the
five board members who
voted for it.
"In keeping with our policy
against involving the agency
in partisan election issues,"
Naftaly said, "ADL did not
take a position for or against
the recall campaign. How-
ever, after careful delibera-
tion, we did arrive at a posi-
tion of support for the em-
ployment policy itself."

Naftaly, himself a South-
field resident and parent of a
Southfield student, said that
the Michigan ADL's decision
was made after a thorough
review of the Southfield poli-
cy, and the finding that it
was totally in keeping with
the National ADL policy on
affirmative action adopted
in 1972.
Charles H. Tobias, vice
chairperson of ADL's Michi-
gan Board and chairperson of
that group's affirmative ac-
tion subcommittee, pointed
out that the committee re-
viewed the Southfield pro-
gram as it is written, but, he
said "inasmuch as we do not
have experience with how it
Will be implemented, we con-
fined our response to what is
proposed. We find nothing
objectionable in the policy,
and urge support of it from
Southfield residents."

LETTER BOX

Dictionary Slander Corrected

Editor, The Jewish News:
Having regard to the sup-
port and coverage you have
afforded me during my cam-
paign for the removal of the
derogatory, defamatory and
wholly deplorable and unwar-
ranted definitions of the word
Jew from the Oxford English
dictionaries — and my High
Court action against the pub-
lishers—the Clarendon Press
of Oxford—may I point out
that I recently came across
derogatory definitions of Jews
and religion in the "Popular
Spanish Language Salvat Dic-
tionary" published in Barce-
lona and distributed in South
America.
Among definitions for Jew
was: "usurer," "excessive
and scandalous profits," "mi-
ser," and others equally of-
fensive.
I complained to the Spanish
Embassy, London, and I have
received a letter signed by
Mr. Luis Villalba, the minis-
ter for cultural affairs. He
writes, "I immediately ini-
tiated enquiries in Spain. I
have now received a reply
from the Editorial Salvat, re-
garding the definition • of
"Jew" as given in their dic-
tionary.

"I am informed that the
basic lexical content of the
dictionary was written in 1967
and corresponds to that con-
tained in the Dictionary of the
Spanish Royal Academy. At
the time that modifications
were made to the latter, the
Salvat Dictionary was al-
ready in print.
"However, since then a
new edition has been pub-
lished by Salvat, and this con-
tains the altered text, of
which you will no doubt ap-
prove, bringing it into line
with the modifications al-
ready made by the Spanish
Royal Academy. I enclose
photo-copies of the old 'and
the new text for your perus-
al, together with other en-
tries relating to Judaism,
which may be of interest to
you."
I am satisfied that the new
Salvat Dictionary is free
from the offensive definitions
of the word Jew.
Each dictionary, book or
play which perpetuates libels
on Jewry, is a carrier of one
of the world's oldest social
diseases—Anti-Semitism .

Devaluation Seen

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Knes-
set Member Simha Ehrlich,
chairman of the executive
committee of Israel's Liberal
Party, told a gathering at
the Industrialists' Club here
that there will have to be a
new devaluation of the Is-
rael currency in 1975, since
the earlier one has failed to
accomplish its purpose.
Ehrlich, a member of the
Knesset Finance Committee,
declared that only three
months following the Novem-
ber 1974 devaluation the gov-
ernment has resumed award-
ing premiums to exporters.
This proves, he said, that the
latest devaluation failed to
promote an increase in ex-
ports.
Ehrlich proposed a series
of small devaluations which
will constantly adujust the
value of the 'Israel pound
to economic change taking
place throughout the world.
According to Ehrlich, such
a policy would avoid the trau-
matic effects that occur with
major devaluations such as
the most recent one.

Your article in the Jan. 31
