Soviets Reject Tr ade Pact
to Hurt Jackson, Help Ford?
By JOSEPH POLAKOFF
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
There is growing speculation
here in some circles that the
Soviet repudiation of the 1972
trade agreement was intend-
ed to accomplish two things.
The first was to destroy
Sen. Henry M. Jackson (D-
Wash.) as a potential presi-
dential candidate. The sec-
ond was to advance Presi-
dent Ford and S'ecretary of
State Henry A. Kissinger by
putting the blame on Jack-
son and "internal affairs"
and not saying anything about
Kissinger's assurances in his
Oct. 18 letter to Jackson
which Ford also approved.
Some here speculate that
the Soviet attack on Jackson
was designed with the help
of some Americans knowledg-
eable in the high politics of
the presidential campaign
that is emerging.
Similarly, it is said that
Soviet Communist Party Sec-
retary Leonid I. Brezhnev's
cancellation of his visit to
Egypt, Syria and Iraq is a
charade also done with the
foreknowledge of Washington
to accomplish the objective
of pressuring Israel.
The "'break" in Egyptian-
Soviet relations would appear
as the big opportunity for Is-
rael to withdraw and for
Egypt, Jordan and Syria to
advance into the areas held
by the Israelis.
This is supported by the
DRAPERY CLEANERS
circumstances that Soviet ad-
visors are still in Egypt, and
the great feat by Egyptian
President Anwar Sadat in
"chasing" the Russians out
of Egypt two years ago found
the Russians supplying Egypt
with material for the Yom
Kippur War.

It is further believed that
Sadat is engaging in a char-
ade for psychological pur-
poses in saying that he is
for step-by-step negotiations
and peace with Israel.

JERUSALEM — No victim
of a terrorist atrocity has in-
spired such an outpouring of
sympathy from the Israel
public as De Jean Replogle,
the 16-year-old Baptist pil-
grim from Jacksonville, Fla.,
who lost a leg as a result of
a grenade thrown at a bus at
Nazarus' Tom b in East
Jerusalem.
De Jean is hospitalized at
the Hadassah-Hebrew Uni-
versity Medical Center here,
where her parents have been
given a physician's apart-
ment.
Letters, messages, presents
and visitors from all over
Israel as well as from the
United States pour into the
Medical Center every day.
Doctors say that as soon as
De Jean's wound is healed,
she will be ready for the fit-
ting of an artificial limb. This
may take another few weeks.
The shrapnel of the gren-
ade entered in the pelvic re-
gion, where it tore up the
main artery, leaving the low-
er limb without any blood
supply. Several attempts to
repair the artery failed.
