Detroiter Finds Jewish Identity Shifmans Dedicate Woodland During Junior Year in Israel JERUSALEM — "Many Americans have a utopian image of modern Israel. But let's face it. There are inter- nal problems here too—social problems and economic prob- lems," observed Larry Sklar, a junior:year-abroad student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Larry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Sklar, 30900 Clubhouse Lane, Farmington Hills. He did not come to Israel to study the modern state, but has found a unique opportunity to understand the situation in Israel the year after the Yom Kippur War. "One problem is that so much time and money have been spent on security wor- ries," he said. "The stand- ard of living suffers. The so- cial area suffer. But as long as Israeli leaders share tra- ditional Jewish values I'm sure there will be a concen- trated effort to clear up so- cial problemS as soon as the security problems are stabil- e ized." Majoring in both Hebrew and psychology at Wayne State University, Larry went to Israel to study the sources of Jewish traditions and to learn more about his own Jewish identity. "I've been able to look more objectively at my Judaism," he said, "and understand it more. In- stead of just having blind faith I've started to think and evaluate. "Being here you receive a very different impression of Jewish history and tradition. Israel brings things all to- gether. There are echoes of ancient Israel everywhere." After completing his BA at Wayne, Larry plans to at- tend graduate school in Jew- ish education. He is studying modern Hebrew, Jewish thought, and Jewish history at the Hebrew University and also studies traditional .Jewish sources — Bible and Jewish law — at a yeshiva in Jerusalem. He is one of some 450 over- seas students on the one-year program at the Hebrew Uni- versity. Writer Says U.S. Propaganda Drive May Hurt Kissinger Talks NEW YORK — New York Times columnist Jam6 Res- ton wrote recently that Sec- retary of State Henry Kis- singer's planned trip to the Middle East will be more Don't try to forget mistakes complicated than in the past of the past—use the experi- due to the recent propaganda ences as a guide for the fu- campaign 'by Israeli and ture. Arab extremists in the U.S. Reston concluded in an arti- cle entitled, "Who Are The Friends of Israel?" that the campaign may harm rather than help Israel especially during the present economic crisis. According to Reston "nothing is more likely to damage Israel's chances of getting another large trans- fusion of American military and economic aid than a big propaganda campaign by the Israeli hardliners. "They have great influence in the Congress, but in the middle of the present econo- mic crisis, a slogan of no Is- raeli concessions and more American arms has a very ALL OUR limited appeal." OLDSMOBILES HAVE Reston added that Kissing- er did some damage with his SAKS APPEAL own remark about the pos- sible use of force in the' Mid- 35300 GRAND RIVER FARMINGTON HILLS east in the event of "some 478-0500 • 478-6677 Res. 968-5048 actual strangulation of the industrial world." According to Reston, Kis- singer's statement set off a string of articles by extrem- ists and those not so extreme. One of the "extremists" he Bertha Greenberg Betty Katzman quoted was Robert W. Tuck- er, who wrote in the Ameri- THE can Jewish Committee's mag- azine, Commentary, that the oil cartel could be broken by seizing the Arabian oil fields along 'the Persian Gulf. How- LTD. ever, Reston said the article was' followed by more force- ful statements by spokesmen for the oil-producing coun- tries, "pretending interven- tion in the Middle East." However, Reston quoted 'Pulitzer Prize-winning histor- ian, Barbara W. Tuchman, who contends that the Israeli concessions which Kissinger . recommends are a form- of "futile appeasement." According to Barbara Tuch- man, "There follows a rising demand upon Israel for con- cessions: a return of the Mit- la and Giddi passes and) Si- nai oil fields to Egypt, the Golan Heights to Syria, Jeru- salem to satisfy King Faisal, the West Bank to the PLO. 15075 Lincoln, Oak Park 48237 "After that, why not give up sovereignty altogether, Suite 111 968 1780 and share a democratic state Tues.-Sat. 10-5 Thurs. Reston writes that a Zion- ist Organization of America advertisement in the Jan. 30 issue of the New York Times follows the same line sug- gesting that appeasement of the "Soviet-Arab axis" will not .bring peace or lower oil prices, only a secure Israel in alliance with the ,U.S. can bring about those results. I. F. Stone, whom Reston calls a calmer voice, wrote that it would be dangerous for the future of the U.S. JeWish community and Israel to have it look as if the "Jew- ish influence" 'were trying to get the U.S. into war with the Arabs." He said the eco- nomic crisis and energy crisis are problems enough for the U.S. HISTADRUT is the great organization of Israel's pioneers and builders. It was founded in 1920 by David Ben-Gurion and his col- leagues. All of Israel's Prime Ministers, from Ben-Gurion through Moshe Sharett, Levi Eshkol and Golda Meir, have come from the ranks of Histadrut to lead the country along the road to a better society based on the noble ideals of the Hebrew prophets. HISTADRUT encompasses nearly two mil- lion men, women and children in Israel. It maintains the country's largest health serv- ice, Kupat Holim, whose hospitals, clinics and related medical institutions care for 70% of the entire population. Histadrut maintains one of Israel's finest vocational school systems; a national network of cul- tural and educational centers; homes for the aged; children's villages for the young; and many other facilities.
