A women's champagne af-
ternoon and a men's cocktail
party held last week initiated
the Junior Division's 1975 Al-
lied Jewish Campaign-Israel
Emergency Fund formal ac-
tivities.
The record-breaking turn-
outs were recorded at both
meetings.
The women's pre-Campaign
section champagne afternoon,
held at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Leslie 11.• Schmier, was
attended by 60 young women.
Guest speaker and Women's
Division Campaign chairman
Ruth Broder discussed the
"responsibility and oneness"
every Jewish woman must
share with the women of Is-
rael.
Recently returned from an
intensive United Jewish Ap-
peal Chairmen's Mission to
Israel, Mrs. Broder described
the serious problems faced
by its inhabitants.
"This is a crucial time for
Israel," said Mrs. Broder.
"The continued influx of im-
migrants as well as inflation-
ary problems jeopardizing
the country's social service
Dr. Kasimir Fajans, re-
tired University of Michigan
professor will be presented
with a gold award by the Af-
filiate Council of the Engin-
eering Society of Detroit Feb.
19 at the Engineering Society.
Dr. Fajans, 87, was pro-
fessor of chemistry at U-M
from 1936 to 1957. During his
service there the Kasimir
Fajans Award in Chemistry
was established-
Born in Poland, Dr. Fajans
attended the University of
Leipzig, Germany, and earned
his PhD at Heidelburg Uni-
versity. He was a research
fellow at Zurich University in
1910, joined the faculty of
Karlsruhe Institute in Ger-
many in 1911 and 1917 dis-
covered the first isotope of
element 91 in the periodic
table.
He lectured at Oxford Uni-
versity, the university of
Cambridge and Cornell Uni-
versity. Dr. Fajans' studies
have been in the areas of
general chemistry, radioac-
tivity, isotopes, thermochem-
isty, theory of c h e m i c al
forces, photochemistry, light
absorption, refractivity, solu-
tions of electrocytes, volum-
etric analysis, structure of
glass and chemical binding.
