Mission of Israeli Tour Guide
Lands Him Spot on U.S. TY

Israel Sulkovitz's knowl-
edge of his country's back
roads led him on a special
mission for the U.S. and to
an appearance on the CBS
Evening News.
Sulkovitz, an Israeli tour
guide, led CBS newsman
Peter Kalisher, from front to
front during the war, follow-
ing Israeli tanks from Da-
mascus to the Suez Canal.
His American clients called
him to say they saw him on
national TV in news film shot
in Israel.
Sulkovitz was in Detroit
last week as the guest of the
Bee Kalt Travel Service, for
whom he provides various
services for clients as the
agency's "man in Israel." He
was tendered a cocktail party
at thes North Park Towers

penthouse at which he was
reunited with former clients.
Born in Poland, Sulkovitz
came to pre-state Israel 40
years ago. He became a tour
guide about 20 years ago,
beginning by leading chil-
dren on week-long tours in
makeshift tour buses, made
of old trucks lined with
benches. Now he leads group
and individual tours in pri-
vate -cars.
Sulkovitz met the Kalts
about three years ago while
they were touring Israel. He
speaks eight languages in-
cluding Hebrew, English, Po-
lish, Italian, German, Yid-
dish, Russian and Arabic.
He will be in the U.S. for
five weeks to visit former
clients.

Evans, Novak Bias Hit Again

The Near East Report in
Washington has repeated its
criticism of nationally syndi-
cated columnists Rowland
Evans and Robert Novak for
confusing the Israeli total
defense budget with requests
for U.S. aid, and the asser-
tion that the Syrian attack
during the Yom Kippur War
was "pre-emptive."
In its Jan. 22 issue. Near
East Report said that Evans
and Novak repeated the mis-
take last week about Israel's
budget, claiming that the Is-
raelis were asking the U.S.
for $4 billion, instead of $1.5
billion.
Their column was a re-
sponse to critics who de-
scribed their articles as anti-
I srael. That column was ex-
c erpted in last week's Jewish
N ews.
Evans cited a New York
Ti mes article as his source
f or the U.S. aid figure, but

the Near East Report says
the Times article reported
the facts correctly, and Ev-
ans did not.
The Near East Report
said, "This is not the first
time we have criticized Ev-
ans' reporting on the Arab-
Israel conflict. As far back
as March 17, 1970, we pub-
lished an analysis on 'The
Mini-War of Evans and No-
vak.'
"Regrettably, the columns
published since that time
show that the war continues
with a minimum of fact and
a maximum of vigor."
Near East Report also
quoted a conversation be-
tween Secretary of State
Henry Kissinger, and former
Senator J. Wm. Fulbright
after one of the columns
about U.S. aid to Israel. Kis-
singer told Fulbright that the
Evans column was in error,
and, "I am afraid to read his
column these days."
