Noted NBC Journalist Carl Stern to Speak at Beth Achim Event
Carl Stern, noted TV re-
porter and analyst, will be
the guest speaker at Cong.
Beth Achim's dedication din-
ner-dance Feb. 16 in the Was-
serman Hall of the syna-
gogue.
Stern has covered more
trials and hearings than any
other TV reporter. These
have included Watergate, the
Berrigan case and the trials
of Sam Sheppard, James
Hoffa, Muhammed Ali and
Arthur Bremer. He has been
the NBC analyst on Water-
gate from the very beginning,
and he covers all legal mat-
ters in the nation for NBC,
including the U.S. Supreme
Court.
Stern has been admitted to
the practice of law in Ohio, in
Washington, D.C. and before
the Supreme Court. He was
graduated from Columbia
University in public law and
government in 1958 and re-
ceived a master's degree in
journalism from Columbia.
In 1966 he received a doctor
of jurisprudence degree from
the Cleveland-Marshall Law
School of Baldwin Wallace
College.
The dinner will be the cul-
mination of the dedication
weekend, starting with a late
Friday evening service Feb.
14, which will honor all the
past presidents of the syna-
gogue and the affiliates. Rab-
bi Emeritus Benjamin H.
Gorrelick will preach the
sermon and the service will
be conducted by Rabbi Mil-
ton Arm and Cantor Simon
Bermanis. An oneg Shabat
gathering will he hosted by
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Blas, in
honor of their daughter's Bat
Mitzva.
The Sabbath service on
Feb. 15, conducted by Rabbi
Arm and Cantor Bermanis,
will be accompanied by a
male choir. Rabbi Arm will
preach on "Making a Sanc-
tuary — For Whom and For
What", Harry Laker, presi-
dent of the congregation, will
present greetings. A kidush
will follow the services.

synagogue. He will speak on
"Moralism and Mysticism,
Two Views of Jewishness:
Bernard Malamud and Elie
Wiesel."
Future speakers include
Seymour Riklin, coordinator
of special projects, adult edu-
cation program, College of
Lifelong Learning at WSU;
and Leonard Tennenhouse,
assistant professor of English
at WSU.
The series, sponsored by
the adult education commit-
tee, is open to the public at
a nominal charge. Refresh-
ments will be served.

at Local Seminary
Rabbi Richard C. Hertz of
Temple Beth El will speak
on "Jerusalem in Jewish and
Christian Tradition" 3:15 p.m.
Tuesday at Duns Scotus Col-
lege. The rabbi will also
speak on "The Theology of
the Old Testament" at 6:30
p.m. at the college.
Rabbi Hertz's appearance
is sponsored by the Jewish
Chautauqua Society, the edu-
cational project of the Na-
tional Federation of Temple
Brotherhoods.

the synagogue.
