Subtitled "The Importance of Mourning," her book is an outgrowth of her career of counseling married couples and the loss of her own hus- band. Unfortunately, with the ex- ception of one chapter on the processes of mourning and grief, and a few general in- sights, Mrs. Pincus gives examples of too many of her clients, who can not handle a personal loss and must seek professional help. The number of persons in society who fit these cate- gories is certainly low, and the reader is faced with a book that might be more ap- propriate as reference for a college class of psychology majors. In her preface Mrs. Pincus says 'her book is a personal effort "to participate in the recent attempts to lift the taboo from death, dying and bereavement by promoting discussion of these funda- mental themes." However, basing her book on the marital problems she encounters in her clients who have suffered bereavement, does not meet the needs of the general reader. In her one general discus- sion Mrs. Pincus says that shock is the first phase that the bereaved will experience. The age-old advice of "keep going," "don't think about it" and "keep busy" may do more harm by supressing the grief than by allowing it to be expressed. During the controlled phase of mouring relatives a n d friends help the bereaved as the initial shock of death begins to fade. 14—Friday, January 3L 1975 HURTIG WINDOW INTERIORS isi t a LONDON (JTA)—A strike by slaughterers employed by the Jewish Ecclesiastical Au- thority here is causing a se- vere shortage of kosher meat. Eventually, Mrs. Pincus says, little re- membrances of the deceased bring a freshness and pleas- ure to the life of the be- reaved. Unfortunately, through the bulk of the book, Mrs. Pincus describes the marriage prob- lems of her clients which are caused by a parent's death and the affect the client's up- bringing had on the parent- child relationship. —Alan Hitsky ALL OUR .
