SAN ANT O N I 0, Texas
(JTA)—The Alamo may be a
shrine and monument to Tex-

Saudi Arabia it might be just
a nice present for his son.
According to the San An-
tonio News, Sheik Masoud
Al-Sharif Al Hamdan wrote
to a lawyer in Texas explain-

In London, wealthy Arabs
are invading Britain's real
estate market, buying luxury
housing here and elsewhere
at prices that apparently few
others can afford, according
to reports from realty agents.
The latest deal is the 2 mil-
lion pounds sterling purchase
by an unidentified Arab gov-
ernment of Consort Lodge, a
block 'of flats described as the
most luxurious in all of Eur-
ope, overlooking Regents
Park in central London.
The lodge comprises 14
flats and two penthouses that
range in rent from 115-250,-
000 pounds sterling. Agents
who handled the transaction
could not say whether the
government involved intends
to house its diplomats there
or to become landlord to
wealthy Britons.
Recently, 15 flats costing
between 30-50,000 pounds
sterling each at Serbly Court,
Holland Park, West London,
have been sold to an individ-
ual Middle East buyer. Two
large 100,000 pound houses
in Kensington have been sold

Special Screening
for Aliya Applicants

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
Federation Guidance and
Employment Service de-
scribed a new program for
screening applicants for aliya
to help determine their suit-
ability for the rigors of life
in a different environmental
and cultural milieu.
Dr. Walter Duckat, guid-
ance director of the FEGS,
an agency of the Federation
of Jewish Philanthropies,
said, "testing for motivation,
emotional capacity and abil-
ity to withstand the vexations
and hardships which may be
encountered in Israel in-
volves a complex- amalgam
of standard procedures and
innovative analysis."
The program was initiated
by the FEGS in cooperation
with the settlement depart-
ment of the Jewish Agency
and the Jewish Occupational
Council.
The first project involved
screening 20 families in the
New York City area who
planned to join an Israeli co-
operative.
Those who passed the in-
tricate screening tests are
now resettled in Israel and
their enterprise, a year-round
greenhouse to cultivate to-
matoes for export, is well
under way.

The telephone was invented
by Alexander Graham Bell
in 1878. Yet in the year 1722,
Rabbi David Oppenheim of
Prague asked his brother-in-
law, Rabbi Jacob Risher, if
it is permitted on the Sab-
bath, according to Jewish
law, to use an instrument
capable of transmitting the
human voice miles distant.

Hampstead house for almost
250,000 pounds sterling.
Prince Nawaf, a member
of the Saudi Arabian royal
family just bought a 37-year
lease on a house in Knights-
bridge for 300,000 pounds
sterling. Real estate agents
say the Arabs are attracted
by very competitive prices
now being asked for top
quality property.
They are said to be well
advised and tend to name a
price which they stick to.
They also expect the deals
to go through with minimum
delay, the agents said.
