May Hurt Jews Over Future of Community

American Jews have been
described as facing the corn-
ing years "confident — per-
haps over-confident" — about
the future of the American
Jewish community, with op-
timism that the institutions
and organizations they have
created "are adequate to
cope with whatever problems
lie ahead at home and
abroad."
That evaluation was made
by Will Maslow, general
counsel of the American Jew-
ish Congress, in a 46-page
study, "The Structure and
Functioning of the American
Jewish Community," pub-
lished by the AJCongress and
the American Section of the
World Jewish Congress.
Maslow added that Amer-
ican Jews "are worried about
the safety of Israel and de-
termined to struggle in be-
half of Soviet Jewry."
Maslow expressed concern
about the rate of mixed mar-
riage among Jews, which he
said was currently estimated
at about 32 percent, and
about the "weakening" of
Jewish religious identity
which he said he felt pro-
duced the high rate of mixed
marriages.
He declared that Jews have
a role in the political life of
this country "whose signifi-
cance far transcends their
proportion of the popula-
tion." For one think; "be-
cause they are concentrated
in the 12 largest states, Jew-
ish voters in a close Presi-
dential election could swing
the election from one candi-
date to the other." In addi-
tion, the percentage of Jews
who register and vote, par-
ticularly in primary elec-
tions, and who take part in
politics as policy-makers and
fund-raisers "is probably
higher than that of any other
racial, religious or ethnic
group."
