Scotland Yard Probes Shootings at Jewish-Owned London Hotels LONDON, (JTA) — Scot- land Yard is investigating machingun attacks on two Jewish-owned West End ho- tels Sunday where seven women and one man were slightly injured by bullets and flying glass. A spokes- man said "It is a fair assump- tion that there is a connec- tion between the two inci- dents." Detectives were re- porteily looking into possi- ble anti-Semitic or anti-Is- rael aspects of the attacks. More than 200 young Jews were attending a dance at the Portman Hotel when the attackers sprayed machine- gun fire in the hotel restau- rant. Three hours later ma- chineguns were fired into the restaurant at the Carlton Towers Hotel where a Jew- ish wedding reception was being held. The Carlton Tow- ers is owned by the Chinn family. Rosser Chinn, the head of the family, is a former pres- ident of the Jewish National Fund of Britain and his son, Trevor, is deputy chairman of the Joint Israel Appeal. The Portman Hotel is fre- quented by El Al air crews on their stopovers in London. One El Al flight crew arrived at the hotel last night only 30 minutes after the attack. Police are considering a possible link of that attack to a similar assault five weeks ago on the Churchill Hotel which is also Jewish owned and adjacent to the Portman. Two Americans were hurt in the earlier attack. According to police, the attackers pulled up in front of the Portman in a red Rover car, fired their ma- chineguns and sped away. The attack on the Carlton Towers was almost identical in method. The assailants abandoned their car several blocks from the hotel and escaped on motorcycles, po- lice said. While sources here said that the Irish Republican Army could not be ruled out completely for the attacks, they pointed out that the IRA specializes in bombs, not ma- chineguns. Its long-range ramifi- cations, however, are still clouded for Israel and the Jewish communities of the world. As for ORT, the effect of the war was to bring on a financial crisis of unprece- dented magnitude as it pre- pared to meet the new situ- ation. In fact, as a conse- quence of last year's finan- cial dislocation, ORT was forced to face what its lead- ers called "a crisis unlike any in its recent history." Yet ORT was not deterred by t h e seemingly insur- mountable burden nor by the immensity of the task ahead. Even while its funds were running low to meet the new exigencies, its eyes were focused on a more significant objective — continued on- Ex-Bank Manager Convicted in Israel tion in the Israel Bond Or- ganization in Brook line, Mass. As• I sat down at my type- writer, I examined ORT's 1974 Yearbook for factual material and what emerged was a truly remarkable ef- fort, reflecting change and growth in virtually all areas of the organization's activi- ties. Figures, it has been said, often tend to obscure as much as they illuminate. The figures emerging from ORT's Yearbook 1974, illum- inate not only an effort and a striving but a vision and a dream that has endured now close to 95 years. What lingers on indelibly is the image of an organiza- tion that is dedicated to giv- ing people the tools with which to live in Israel and in all the lands of Jewish dwelling. No mitzva in the Jewish spectrum compares with that of training people in the use of hands and minds for livelihood. The cost of HISTADRUT'S programs has escalated far beyond the average level of worldwide inflation. Each new hospital and clinic, part of HISTADRUT'S expanding nation-wide system of medical care, each new vocational school or cultural center requires substantially more funding than in the past. With the same courage, strength and unbending faith, we must, as we have in the past, share in the responsibility for these programs. We must help to supply the needed funds.
