The Haifa University, tak- ing into consideration that in its region is the greatest concentration of Arab young- sters in Israel, has made many facilities available to Arab students. As the common standard of Arab high schools was not at the same level as in He- brew schools, the university authorities introduced special courses for Arab students to facilitate their progress in 4 t" studies. Special teach- r. the university helped L A Arab students before each test. The university au- thorities encouraged friendly relations between Jewish and Arab students, but it turned out that the Arab students became ardent admirers of Arafat and .opponents of Is- rael. A similar situation involves 500 Arab students in the Hebrew University of Jeru- salem. The university has decided to keep patrol guards of students on the campus and in the dormitories in order to defend them against terrorist attacks. The Arab students refused to take part in the guards. The Jewish students who are living to- gether in the dormitories appealed to the university authorities to compel the Arab students to take part in the guards. During the last years good relations were maintained at Hebrew University between Jewish and Arab students, but the last event marred the relations because the Jewish students maintained, that they were not obliged to guard the Arab students against terrorist attacks. The Arab students reacted with nationalist anti-Israeli slo- gans. In both universities, in Haifa and Jerusalem, ex- treme leftist and Marxist circles of Jewish students in- cite the Arab students to adopt an anti-Israeli attitude and to publish solidarity declarations for Arafat. Both universities are adopting now urgent steps in order to re- store good relations between Jewish and Arab students.
