Mrs. Ben-Hur, 65,
Ex-Military Officer

Benni Mahrshak,
of Palmach Force

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Mrs.
Lea Ben-Hur, wife of retired
Gen. Aliyahu Ben-Hur and
herself a former officer in
the Israeli Army, died Jan.
11 in Safed at age 65.
Mrs. Ben-Hur, who served
in British ATS units during
World War II, later , held the
rank of major in Israel's ar-
my, was parliamentary sec-
retary of the Mapam faction
and also worked at the Is-
raeli, Consulate in Los An-
geles.
She and her husband
moved to Kiryat Sbemona six
months ago to encourage the
people of that border village
that has been the target of
ist attacks.

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Benni
Mahrshak, a pioneer mem-
ber of Palmach, the strike
force • of Hagana before the
Israeli state was founded,
died here Jan. 4 of cancer
at age 68.
Mahrshak was born in the
Ukraine the son of a rabbi
and as a child he witnessed
his father's murder by po-
gromists. When he came to
Palestine he joined Kibutz
Givat Hashlosha.
He participated in Maga-
na's "illegal" immigration
movement before 1948 and
fought in Israel's war of in-
dependence.

Allred F. Lipshaw,
Local Accountant

= Alfred F. Lipshaw, a certi-
fied public accountant with
offices in Oak Park, died Jan.
9 at age 39.
Born in Monroe, Mr. Lip-
shaw lived 30 years in De-
troit. He was graduated from
Wayne State University and
was a member of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek. He resided-
at 22503 Ivanhoe Ln., South-
field.
He leaves his wife, Jacque-
line; two sons, Marc and
Jeffrey; a daughter, Jodi;
his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Samuel (Rebecca) Lipshaw;
and a sister, Mrs. Milford
( Ilene) Nemer.

Alex HorOwitz, 81,
Founder of Firm

Alex Horowitz, founder and
chairman of the board of Al's
Glass and Auto Supply in De-
troit, died Jan. 10 at age 81.
Born in Russia, Mr. Horo-
witz lived 67 years in Detroit.
He founded' his company in
1920. He was a member of
the Association of Auto Parts
Dealers, and the .Mozer-
Farein society, the Jewish
Community Center, its
branch and culture club, and
City of Hope. He also was
active in many Jewish phil-
anthropies, including the Is-
rael Emergency Fund and
the United Jewish Appeal.
He leaves two sons, Mar-
vin Howard and David How-
ard of Coral Springs, Fla.;
a daughter, Mrs. Harry
(Edith) Lazarus; 13 grand-
children and two great-grand-
sons.

Widow of Bolshevik
Emigrates to Israel

NEW YORK—Maria Ioffe,
the 7'5-year-old widow of a
leading Bolshevik revolu-
tionary, has arrived in Vien-
na on her way to Israel as
an emigrant.
Mrs. Ioffe, a Communist
activist in her youth, spent
26 years in labor camps be-
tween 1929 and 1956 after
being convicted of opposition
activity within the party.
Her husband, Adolf Ioffe,
was a close colleague of
Trotsky. He was elected one
of the 22 members of the
Bolshevik party's Central
Committee in July, 1917.
He later was Soviet Am-
bassador to. Germany, Japan
and China. He killed himself
in 1927 in protest over the
expulsion of Trotsky from the
Communist Party.

Senator Favors
Palestine State,

NEW YORK (JTA) — Sen.
John Sparkman (D-Ala.), the
new chairman of the Senate
Foreign Relations Commit-
tee, said he favors the crea-
tion of a state on the West
Bank for displaced Pales-
tinians, but not one run by
the-Palestine Liberation Or-
ganization.
Sparkman said since both
Israel and Jordan claim the
West Bank, the Palestinian
state "would require negotia-
tion involving both those
countries." The veteran Ala-
bama Senator replaced Sen.
J. William Fulbright as chair-
man of the Foreign Relations
Committee after Fulbright
failed to win reelection to the
Senate.

Beauvoir is the winner of
this year's Jerusalem Prize
"for the freedom of man in
society," Mayor Teddy Kol-
lek announced.
The author, who has re-
jected awards since she won
the Prix Goncourt in 1954 for
her book, ,"The Mandalins,"
has accepted the prize, which
will be given to her at the
opening ceremony of the
Seventh Jerusalem Interna-
tional Book Fair in April.
