Maramzin, described as one of the top Russian lit- erary figures, despite sup- pression of all but a few of his works by the Soviet gov- , ernment, has been charged with collecting forbidden poetry and writing anti-So- viet stories. Maramzin is expected to be sentenced to seven years at hard labor in— a prison camp, and friends do not ex- pect him to survive because of Ms health. Maramzin was arrested after he asked for a letter from Israel that would per- mit him to apply for an exit visa. The document arrived, but he was arrested before a second was received that would have allowed his family to leave. Arrested in July while fill- ing out his exit application, the trial has been postponed twice.
