Michigan Prof. Carl Proffer,
his wife, and Toby Holtzman

behalf of Russian Jewish
writer _Vladimir Maramzin.
Maramzin, described as
one of the top Russian lit-
erary figures, despite sup-
pression of all but a few of
his works by the Soviet gov-

with collecting forbidden
poetry and writing anti-So-

ingrad division of the Union
of Soviet Writers; or to K..
Fedin, head of the Union of
Soviet Writers, Moscow.
Maramzin is expected to
be sentenced to seven years
at hard labor in— a prison
camp, and friends do not ex-
pect him to survive because
of Ms health.
Maramzin was arrested
after he asked for a letter
from Israel that would per-
mit him to apply for an exit
visa. The document arrived,
but he was arrested before
a second was received that
would have allowed his family
to leave.
Arrested in July while fill-
ing out his exit application,
the trial has been postponed
twice. The appeal organizers
ask that letters and corres-
pondence be sent quickly be-
cause the trial is expected
to begin this month.
