Sinai Starts Education Drive Against Tay-Sachs Disease A mass mailing appeal to the Detroit Jewish commu- nity 'to enlist in the war on Tay-Sachs, the infant killing disease, is on its way to 25,- 000 homes in the metropol- itan area. The mailing is the first step in plans to hold a fourth Tay-Sachs screening program to uncover carriers of the dreaded disease which chooses as its main target infants born to Jewish cou- ples of Eastern and Central European heritage. The brochures going to 25,- 000 homes give the dates of the next Tay-Sachs screen- ing, and urge recipients to list and phone sever al friends, and pledge them to plan on being screened. Dates of the next Tay- Sachs screenings are two consecutive Sundays, Feb. 23 and March 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Congregation Beth Achim, located at 21100 West Twelve Mile Road in Southfield. At three previous screen- ings held in the fall of last year, more than 2,000 men and women were tested. Of these, 67 were proven car- riers; and one pregnancy was medically terminated when testing proved the baby would have been born with the disease. Tay-Sachs is caused by the enzyme called "Hex A." Without that enzyme, the body is unable to break down fatty tissues which accumu- late in the brain. — Babies born with the dis- ease develop normally their first six months of life, then suffer increasing degenera- tion leading to loss of control of their bodily functions, co- ma, blindness and then death, by the fifth or sixth year. "The course of the disease is irrevocable, and there is no cure," according to Dr. Ralph Cash, chairman of pe- diatrics at Sinai Hospital and co:chairman of the commu- nity coordinating committee of the Tay-Sachs Screening Program of Metropolitan De- troit. "The only way to beat this disease," he says, "is to eliminate the chance of oc- currence. If we could screen all of the potential carriers in • the metropolitan Jewish community--and we estimate there are 30,000 people who should be screened—then we PLO Gets Official Status from India Now appearing: I .4 a ' WASHINGTON (JTA) — The State Department has declined to comment on In- dia's granting full diplomatic status to the Palestine Lib- eration Organization. Formal diplomatic rela- tions were established in Beirut where India's Ambas- sador to Lebanon, S. K. Singh, and PLO chief Yasir Arafat signed an agreement' last Friday. It was the first accreditation to the PLO from a non-Arab country. Until now the PLO repre- sentative has operated under the auspices of the Arab League office in New Delhi. Singh said the agreement was based on India's recog- nition of the PLO as the le- gitimate representative of the Palestinian people. can alert the actual carriers. Forewarned, t hey could guard against the occurence of Tay-Sachs; and the dis- ease could be wiped out." The Tay-Sachs Screening Program of Metropolitan De- troit is being sponsored fi- nancially by the Jewish Wel- • w w w www w fare Federation with assist- ance from the March of Dimes. Dr. Lester Weiss of Ford Hospital is scientific director of the project, and co-chair- men of the community coor- dinating committee are Dr. Cash and Dr. Hyman S. Mel- len of Sinai Hospital of De- troit. Mrs. Alfred Lakin is chair- man of volunteers and Mrs. Andrew Berger is chairman of the speakers bureau. Or- ganizations wishing to have a speaker address their mem- bership on Tay-Sachs should contact Mrs. Berger at VE 5-3210.
