Israeli Horticultural Group Marks Tu b'Shevat With a Seder
NEW YORK—At the end
of January a number of
American Jews will be con-
ducting seders—for Tu b'She-
v•t. The Jewish New Year
of Trees, which falls on the
15th day of the month of
Shevat or Jan. 27 this year,
has taken on new importance
in America, thanks to re-
search conducted by Neot
Kedumim—The Gardens of
Israel.
A minor festival, Tu b'She-
vat has usually been noted
here by the distribution of
bags of dried fruit to religi-
ous school children. Many
Jewish homes also serve figs,
dates, raisins, nuts and bok-
ser (carob) as a remem-
brance of the produce of Is-
rael.
At one time, however, Rosh
Hashana I'Ilanot (New Year,
for Trees) was a major cele-
bration. In the city of Safed
in Israel, the world center of
Kabalism in the 16th Cen-
tury, the Kabalists actually
held an all-night seder on Tu
b'Shevat eve.
The Tu b'Shevat Seder, like
the Passover Seder, included
the drinking of four cups of
wine. But the kabalists made
one important change. They
drank four different cups of
wine: white, pink, pink-red,
and red—in that order mir-
roring the annual changing
of the natural landscapes of
the land of Israel.
At the end of the summer

the hills and lowlands of Is-
rael are blanketed with white
wildflowers—squill and sand
lilies. Later on white crocus-
es and narcissus appear. As
winter approaches, pink cy-
clamens 'appear in the moun-
tains.
By Tu b'Shevat the first
red anemones are seen, in-
terspersed with white ane-
mones, broom flowers and
others, and by Passover the
red tulip (biblical rose of
Sharon) and red buttercups
almost cover the hillsides.
The last of the natural red
carpets is formed by the
wild poppy which -blooms
through May.
This white-to-red sequence
also occurs in deciduous
trees. Until Tu b'Shevat,
their branches remain bare

Has Young Female
Soprano Cantor
PHILADELPHIA (JTA) —
The cantor at T'feres Bnai
Israel in Warrington is a 19-
year-old lyric soprano. Ida
Hersh became one of the few
women cantors in the United
States when the congregation
found itself without a cantor
last summer and she was
given an audition for the
post.
After passing the audition,
she began a dual career as a
student during the week at
the Philadelphia Music Acad-
emy and a cantor on the
weekends. She described her
cantorial role as "a natural
outgrowth of the changing
role of. Jewish women.','
