LETTER BOX Sabbath Work Near Synagogue Ordered by Cit y for Safety Editor, The Jewish News: With reference to the letter in The Jewish News, on Jan. 10, 1975, that referred to building of an Orthodox syna- gogue on the Sabbath, please be advised that our company from the very beginning en- tered into a binding agree- ment with the congregation that no construction of any kind would take place by our company or any subcontrac- tors on the Sabbath or Holy Days. To this date no con- struction work on that build- , ing has ever taken place on the Sabbath. The officers of the syna- gogue have absolutely no knowledge of any work at the synagogue. We as general contractors have the full re- sponsibility of planning and carrying out all phases of construction. The circumstances which brought about the occur- rence referred to must be clearly defined. A particular phase of sewer work had to be performed, wherein a por- tion of piping had to be con- nected under the street (Lin- coln Boulevard). The City of Oak Park, department of en- gineering, would, only allow a tunnel to be dug to the main city sewer line, instead of open excavation of the street. Our plumbing sub-contrac- tor engaged a specialized "sewer Contractor" to per- form this tunneling and sewer connection operation. It was agreed and understood that this work could be started on Thursday, Jan. 2, and completed by noon on Fri- day, Jan. 3. Toward the end of the work day the City Engineer, Mr. Henry Lybeck, inspected the work in progress. It was ob- vious to him the sewer con- nection could not be complet- ed that day and a severe danger had .been created. Detroit's Jewish Libraries Form New Association Librarians in Jewish li- braries in the Detroit area, have formed the Jewish Li- brary Association of Metro- politan Detroit. The group is seeking mutual cooperation and exchange of information and materials, raising the professional status of Jewish librarians, and the dissemi- nation of information to the Jewish COmmunity at large. As a result of the first meet- ing Jan. 8, the Jewish Com- munity Council is planning to prepare and distribute a li- brary directory. Eleven libraries are repre- sented in the Association. Mrs. Mae Weine, librarian at Cong. Beth Abraham-Hillel, was elected chairman of the group, and Steven Rabino- witz, of the Shaarey Zedek library, was named secre- tary. The next meeting of the association will be held on April 9, at the B'nai Moshe library. Due to the underground tun- neling, it appeared that the street pavement could cave in and create a public hazard to life and limb. Mr. Lybeck ordered the sewer contractor to proceed post-haste to com- plete the entire connection and back-fill the excavation. Subsequently, the street did collapse and thank God, no one was injured. Recognize the fact that the sewer contractor was not our employe, nor was he a sub- contractor under our direc- tion. At the entire time of this occurrence, all of the activity involved on Sabbath, Jan. 4, was being carried out on City of Oak Park prop- erty, well removed from the boundaries of the synagogue property. The work being performed was under the di- rection and jurisdiction of. the Engineering -Department of the City of Oak Park. We have previously in- formed all of our sub-con- tractors of the holiness of the Sabbath and holidays, and henceforth, a written no- tice will be sent to them pro- hibiting any and all types of work, activity and deliveries to be done or made at the site of the synagogue on Sabbath and all religious holidays.
