World Tributes Honor Tucker's Memory

Tributes to the memory of
Richard Tucker are pouring
in from Jewish communities
throughout the world and
from music lovers every-
where.
Israel joined in mourning
his passing. His many ap-
pearances there, his courage-
ous appearances at war
fronts, during the June 1967
events and on other occa-
sions, and his close relation-
ship with Israeli musicians,
were recalled in the tributes.

PHILADELPHIA (JTA)—
More than 500 academicians
from a dozen universities,
colleges and professional
schools in New Jersey and
Pennsylvania announced that
they were suspending their
collaboration with UNESCO.
They said the move was
a protest against UNESCO's
vote last month to exclude
Israel from membership in
its European regional group-
ing and to cut off cultural
aid to Israel.
A statement signed by the
academicians, including sev-
eral university presidents,

YOUR PLACE IN HISTORY...

TO SOME OF US, the opportunity is given to make history.

TO OTHERS falls the responsibility of interpreting and con-
veying history's narrative and meaning to future generations. This
is particularly important as "we the people" commemorate the
nation's Bicentennial.

TO THE AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY falls the
responsibility of collecting, preserving and providing informa-
tion relating to the saga of the Jew in America. Professor
Abraham J. Karp, this Society's President, said recently "no
group has better reason to celebrate the Bicentennial than
the American Jewish community." The place of the American
Jew in our nation's history is part and parcel of our national
heritage. Hitherto unpublished papers of the Sheftall, Lopez
and Salomon families will be edited and issued to mark the
occasion.

Founded in 1892, the Society publishes books, a Quarterly,
newsletters, pamphlets and catalogs as well as produces films.
Located on the campus of Brandeis University, it makes its
treasure of 50,000 books, four million manuscripts and numer-
ous photographs, art objects and paintings available for re-
search and display. HEPE THEN IS YOUR PLACE IN HISTORY—

You can share in the necessary financial support through
Society membership. The cost is modest considering the value
you receive both in services and publications. In addition, you
will know you are aiding an unique, indispensable, function-
ing institution.

executive" beard Wednesday
night, he was memorialized
by local spokesmen who re-
called his last appearance
here, last November, at the
Balfour Concert.
A deeply religious man,
Tucker continued his duties
as a cantor whenever he
could. He conducted Holy
Day services and Passover
sedorim at the Concord Ho-
tel in New York and in var-
ious locations in Florida.
Born Reuben Ticker, the
son of Jewish immigrant
parents, Tucker began sing-
ing in the choir of the Allen
St. synagogue on Manhat-
tan's lower east side at age
6.
He made his debut at the
Metropolitan Opera as Enzo
Grimaldo in "La Giaconda"
on Jan. 25, _1945. The New
York Times critic said he
sang with "warmth and ex-
pressiveness."

sion."
Many of the signatories
who have had relationships
with UNESCO said they
would continue their efforts
to aid educational, scientific
and cultural development in
underdeveloped countries but
felt compelled to do so out-
side of the UNESCO appara-
tus.
The institutions represent-
ed include Rutgers Univer-
sity, Bryn Mawr College,
Drexel University, the Recon-
structionist Rabbinical Col-
lege, Temple University and
the University of Pennsyl-
vania.
The European Cultural
Foundation, based in Am-
sterdam, showed its will to
participate in the develop-
ment of Jerusalem, despite
the resolutions recently tak-
en by UNESCO.
Its executive committee
granted 50,000 guilders to the
Jerusalem Foundation which
aims to make of the holy city
a cultural and spiritual cen-
ter for mankind and a place
where people of different re-
ligions and different cultures
could live together.
Meanwhile, four dissident
Soviet writers now living in
France branded the recent
UNESCO anti-Israeli resolu-
tions as "unfair" and a gross
injustice. The four, Alexan-
der Galich, Vladimir Maxi-
mov, Victor Nekrasov and
Andrei Syniaysky, issued
their statement in a letter to
the French paper, Le Monde.
The paper also printed a
letter from the Israeli dele-
gate to UNESCO, Dr. Eliezer
Yapou, who condemned the
UNESCO votes describing
them as "blind" to reality
and grossly one-sided.
UNESCO's Director Gen-
eral Amadou M'Bow, in an
answering letter, promised
that he will try to "bring
about a compromise" be-
tween opposing points of
view. He pointedly refrained,
however, from criticizing the
votes "of the sovereign states
which comprise the UNESCO
General Conference."

Kissinger is becoming a tar-
get of mounting Greek hostil-
ity toward the United States
in Greece and Cyprus.
Athens news-papers recently
carried a declaration by Bis-
hop Chrysostomos of Piraeus,
the Greek Orthodox Metropol-
itan, stating: "The German
Jewish Secretary of State of
America is making suspicious
trips throughout the world for
the purpose of destroying
Cyprus. Someone should be
found to put a violent end to
his attempts."
In addition, Israel is being
depicted as the chief moti-
vating force of U.S. foreign
policy in the -Mediterranean
region, according to reports
from Athens, and U.S. bases
in Greece are presented as
intended primarily to support
Israel while the U.S. is pic-
tured as having formented
strife in Cyprus to extend its
bases on that island.
