THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, January 10, 1975-27 N.Y. Artists Arabs Blacklist Brazilian Firms RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) - Dr. Israel Klabin, who owns various industrial en- terprises in Brazil including the largest paper mill in the country, said that the Arab decision to blacklist his firms is "an intolerable interfer- ence into the business of a Brazilian firm." Klabin, who was reacting to a report from Beirut, said his firms had never done business with Arab coun- tries. An Arab boycott has also been instituted against two non-Jewish firms that produce soft drinks because their trade marks contain symbols looking like the Star of David. The two firms have never done business with for- eign countries. NEW YORK (JTA) - The Artists Equity Association of New York has appealed to American member associa- tions to withhold cooperation with UNESCO until UNESCO ends its exclusion of Israel. In a resolution, the board of the association said it was joining "the growing number of American writers, artists and scientists in expressing its shock and dismay" over the UNESCO actions. The board said the actions had changed UNESCO "from the world's most important independent, non - partisan cultural body into 'an organ of political confrontation, con- trary to its basic nature and r ea so n for having been brought into being." 962-2300 JERUSALEM (JTA)-The Jewish National Fund is cur- rently engaged in rehabilitat- ing forests in the northern part of the country, damaged during the Yom Kippur War and other hostile actions. During the current season, JNF has planted 200,000 sap- lings, among them 30,000 in the Golan Heights in mem- ory of the armored units' soldiers who fell during the Yom Kippur War. The forests of Mount Car- mel, both remnants of natur- al woodlands and forests planted by the JNF, will be augmented this season by 35,000 trees to be planted on an area of 350 dunams. `New Oil Boycott May Prove Futile' AMSTERDAM (JTA)-Dr. Cornelius Berkhouwer, Dutch chairman of the European Parliament, said during his visit in Israel, that any Arab oil boycott against Europe in the future would be less ef- fective than that imposed during the Yom Kippur War. He said the Arabs may realize that their own inter- ests are ultimately not serv- ed by further harming Eur- ope. Dr. Berkhouwer added that Europe must try to maintain a balance in its relations with all the Middle East countries. THE GREAT Coalition Backer Quits Party JERUSALEM (JTA)-For- mer Supreme Court Justice Binyamin Halevy has resign- ed from Herut, charging the right-wing nationalist faction with inflexibility and failure to come to terms with the political realities governing Israel's future. Halevy said, however, that he would remain in the Knes- set and continue to conduct his parliamentary activities within the framework of the non-Labor opposition Likud of which Herut is a constituent. Haim Landau, the No. 2 man of Herut, responded to Halevy's resignation by ac- cusing the 65-year-old jurist of turning his back on the ideals that had brought him into Herut in whose name he was elected to the Knesset - the ideal of a "Greater Is- rael." Halevy's resignation was a serious blow to Herut which is embroiled in a controversy over whether Likud should join the Labor-led coalition of Premier Yitzhak Rabin on the government's terms. Ha- levy suggested several days ago that Likud accept the government's guidelines, the condition demanded by Rabin for a national unity coalition. Herut was adamantly opposed and his suggestion was turn- ed down. In his letter of resignation to Herut leader Menachem Beigin, Halevy said he felt the party refused to face realities after the Yom Kippur War and that it was fossilizing it- self by the repetition of old formulas which confused ide- ology with what is possible. He charged that Herut fail- ed to learn the basic reason of the war which, according, to Halevy, is that Israel's fu- ture will not be determined by military power on the battle- field but by the super-powers and their policies. Israel should be willing to compro- mise as well as to be ready for war, he said. Halevy, who was one of the presiding judges at the Eich- mann trial, resigned from the Supreme Court five years ago to stand election to the sev- enth Knesset. He was re- elected to the eighth Knesset a year ago. COPENHAGEN (JTA) - It is more than likely that the last three prisoners in- volved in the murder of Ah- med Boushicki in Lilleham- mer in 1973 will receive a pardon, Norwegian sources said. Once a pardon is grant- ed they would have to leave Norway. The three, who are serving sentences from 61/2 to 9 years, -are Sylvia Rafael, Dan Erbel and Avraham Gemmer. Two others who were arrest- ed with them and convicted of espionage and complicity in the murder of the Moroc- can national, have -already been released. Jerusalem Quints Pass First Test JERUSALEM (JTA)-The quintuplets born to Tova and Moshe Medina last Sunday are doing well -and passed the first critical stage of their lives, doctors 'at Ha- dassah Hospital reported. But they said it would be another three weeks before the in- fants' prospects for survival could be determined. The parents, meanwhile, have received a gift in the form of a check from Hadas- sah. The Medinas have also been offered larger living quarters. They presently oc- cupy a two-room flat in Sderot, near Beersheba.
