Students Use Skills
in Israeli Army

KFAR SILVER (ZINS) —
Kfar Silver students are ef-
fectively using their special-
ized educational programs
on behalf of Israel's national
effort..
Shmuel Hirschfeld, direc-
tor of the Kfar Silver campus
reports that a group of 18
third-year students just com-
pleted a month's work in an
Israel Defense Forces ar-
mored maintenance base as
part of their Gadna (para-
military program for high
school youth) training.
The boys, all students at
Kfar Silver Technical School,
worked principally on the
maintenance and repair of
tanks, in a first time pro-
gram to use Gadna high
school pupils in such military
maintenance work.

Authoritative Studies of Jewish Factors in Heredity

By ALLEN A. WARSEN
"The time has not yet
come when a 'how to' book
on genetics can promise you
a child that would paint like
Picasso, swim like Spitz, and
think like Einstein. But if you
are among the millions whose
families are touched by he-
reditary diseases, you can
now be given new hope and
reassurance." These are the
opening sentences of "Hered-
ity and You" (C o w a r d,
McGann & Geoghegan; Fore-
word by Dr. Leon Rosen-
berg) by Augusta Greenblatt.
Indeed, tremendous prog-
ress has been made the last
fifty years in unraveling the
mystery of heredity.
However, not so long ago,
scientists believed that the
female egg contained a fully
developed child. Other scien-
tists disagreed. They claimed
that the male sperm was the
habitat of the child, and from
'there it was "injected into
the egg at conception."
Then in 1865. Gregor Men-
del, who had difficulties pass-
ing school examinations, pub-
lished his great scientific
discovery which revolution-
ized the study of genetics
and solved the enigma—why
normal parents oftentimes
produce defective children. It
also led to the discovery of
many of the causes of
people's hereditary diseases.
The Tay-Sachs was such a
disease.
Why is it called Tay-
Sachs?
It bears this name because

What are the prospects for
helping relieve the pain and
suffering of the sickle cell
victims? Hopeful. It is hoped
that the use of cyanate, still
in the experimental stage,
may be the answer. Should
this prove effective, the vic-
tim of sickle cell, if not
cured, will be helped the
same way diabetics are
helped by insulin.

At this point, I should re-
mark that to comment on all
hereditary disorders describ-
ed in "Heredity and You"
would be ,an impossibility.
Nevertheless, I will comment
briefly on the I.Q. (intelli-
gence quotient) concept:
First, no I.Q. test has as
yet succeeded in accurately
measuring native intelli-
gence.
Second, the I.Q. changes
with age and circumstances.
Third, I.Q. does not indi-
cate racial inferiority or
superiority.
Finally, Jewish children,
though they score higher
than Christian children on
I.Q. tests, even when their
parents' socio-economic sta-
tus is the same, still few
people will "conclude that
Jews are genetically superior
to Christians." Harvard Prof.
Christopher Jencks, in his
1972 book "Inequality: A Re-
assessment of the Effect of
Family and School in Amer-
ica," contends that Jewish
children do well on mental
tests because "Jews treat
their children differently from
Christians even when their
occupations, income, and ed-
ucation are the same." „
"Heredity and You" is
written with deftness and
clarity, and portrays the dra-
matic strides that had been
made, and the efforts being
made to ameliorate, prevent
and cure man's centuries-old
genetic afflictions.
