Rabbi Israel Miller, chair- man of the Conference of Presidents, headed the lead- ership mission, whose four- day visit included meetings with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Foreign Minister Yi- gal Allon, Defense Minister 'Shimon Peres, Finance Min- ister Yehoshua Rabinowitz, Army Chief of Staff Mor- decai Gur, Air Force Com- mander Benjamin P e 1 e d, Jewish Agency Chairman Pinhas Sapir and President Ephraim Katzir. In a statement explaining the purpose of the mission, Rabbi Miller declared: "We are coming to Israel 'to take common counsel with its leaders on the issues that confront the people of Israel and the Jews of America, in- cluding the military and economic strength of the Jewish state as an essential element of the Middle East and the situation confronting Jews in the USSR and in Syria. "We will be exchanging views as well on the effort to build understanding of Israel's cause among the makers of public opinion and public policy in America." "We will bring with us a message of solidarity not only from American Jews but also from millions of American of every race, religion and ethnic origin, who demonstrated by their support of our great rally against Arab terror on Nov. 4 that the American people reject the Palestine Libera- tion Organization's call for the destruction of Israel and repudiate the action of the UN in turning the General Assembly into a forum for murderers." Many of the members of the presidents conference mission to Israel met last week with President Ford. In that meeting, the Presi- dent reaffirmed America's commitment to Israel's integ- rity. "In our meetings with Is- rael's political, military and social welfare leaders, we will both listen and speak," Rabbi Miller stated. "We ex- pect our conversations to be beneficial to us when we re- turn to the U.S. and useful to the leaders of Israel as they adopt policies and draw plans to in te rpret those policies." Arabs Active in Black 'Market TEL AVIV (ZINS)—There is heightened activity on the Tel Aviv and East Jerusalem black market money ex- changes. Buyers of dollars are Arabs from the West Bank provinces of Judea and Shomron, and the sellers are tourists and diamond mer- chants. The official exchange rate is now six pounds to the U.S. dollar, but merchants can ob- tain an average of 6.45 pounds for the dollar on the black market. Arabs seeking dollars are paying as high as IL 6.60 to the dollar. Business circles are con- cerned that these unofficial transactions will gravely harm Israel's foreign cur- rency reserves, since the Arabs take their illicit dol lars to Jordan and exchange them there for Jordanian dinars. 26—Friday, January 3, 1975 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS . . • . • F THE SUSSEX.
