January Declared Lubavitch Month in Michigan Michigan Governor Wil- liam Milliken has signed an executive declaration pro- claiming January 1975 as "Lubavitch Month." Under the leadership of the present Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of New York, Lubavitch has expanded into a global organization, a n d its Hasidic Jewish beliefs and teachings have sunk deep roots in the United States. Lubavitch Center s and abad Houses on cam- es are found in most ma- jor cities in the U.S. and Canada, and thousands of university students have been attracted to the high moral Zuckerman Dances in Chabad dedication of the Hasidic movement. On the tenth day of Shevat (Jan. 22 this year) 25 years of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's leadership will be celebrated around the world. The Governor noted that Detroiter Paul Zuckerman, center, national president the Lubavitcher Rebbe had of the United Jewish Appeal, is shown dancing with the Lubavitcher Hasidim in their town of K'far Chabad on his recent visit to Israel with the UJA mission. Present at the signing of the Declaration in the Gov- ernor's office in Lansing were Irwin I. Cohn, chair- man of Chabad-Lubavitch in Michigan, and Rabbi Berel Shemtov, the executive di- rector. Rabbi Shemtov and Cohn presented the governor with a geographic globe studded with pins marking the loca- tion of Lubavitch of fic es around the world, and the Governor placed a small flag for the Michigan Lubavitch office. The Lubavitcher R e b b e, honored by the Governor's declaration, is currently wag- ing a massive world-wide campaign for all Jewish women and girls — even the very young — to kindle the Sabbath and festival candles every Friday and on the eve of festivals. To mark the 25th leader- ship anniversary, Lubavitch is staging a series of "Hasi- dic Happening" concerts, fea- turing Hasidic singers, danc- ers and musicians. Chair- man of the concerts are Harold Beznos and David Hermelin. "Lubavitch" is an inter- national Jewish organization, part of the Hasidic move- ment. Hasidism was founded in the early 18th Century by Rabbi Israel Baal Shem. Tov at a time when Jews were persecuted. Hasidism was a joyous way of fulfilling Divine com- mands through prayer and devotion of one's life to a higher, godly purpose.
