Michael Berke
Named to Post
in Federation

Michael E. Berke has been
appointed administrative as-
sistant of the Jewish Welfare
Federation, announces Fed-
eration's executive vice pres-
ident William Avrunin.
Berke returns to the Feder-
ation after spending three
years as executive director
of Hillel Day School. His re-
sponsibilities in his new posi-
tion will include duties_ in
both the comMunity-planning
and fund-raising activities of
Federation.
Berke's previous assign-
ment at Federation was as di-
rector of the mercantile and
food divisions of the Allied
Jewish Campaign - Israel
Emergency Fund from 1969
to 1971.

Couple Active in Jewish Affairs Celebrates 60th Wedding, Anniversary

Sauls, longtime contributors
to the general and Jewish
communities of Detroit,are
celebrating their 60th 'WM
ding anniversary.
Coming to the U. S. from
Poland, the Sauls have long
been active in Zionist activi-
ties for, more than 50 years,
and Mr. Sauls was one of the
early leaders of Keren Haye-
sod.. HoweVer, after partici-
pating in early Jewish fund-
raising efforts, Mr. Sauls
left much of their volunteer
activities to hiS wife in order
to attend to his plumbing
supply business.

MR. and MRS. JACK SAULS

Girl Scout leader and partici-
pated in several causes to
aid the poor. She recently
was honored by the National
Council of Jewish Women
along with other 50-year
members and also earned an
award for her participation
in Israel Bond activities. She
was a vice president of Ha-
dassah when that organiza-
tion was in its infancy.
She hops charter member-
ships in the American Jewish
Congress, Brandeis Univers-
ity National Women's Com-
mittee and the Sinai Hospi-
tal Women's Guild. The Sauls
have long been active in the
Allied Jewish Campaign, and
for many years, Mrs. Sauls
was on the board and execu-
tive committees of the Jew-
ish Community Council.
Another of Mrs. Sauls' ma-
jor interests is music. She
helped organize a small group

of amateurs who became the
Detroit Opera- Company, the'
founding of which preceded
the building of Orchestra
Hall:
She sang in the choirs of
Temple Beth El and Temple
Israel, and her efforts also
helped initiate music pro-
grams at the Jewish Corn-
mtinity Center and in local
schools. She was on the
board of the Michigan Feder-
ation of Music Clubs for
many years.
Almost from its inception,
Mrs. Sauls has been a mem-
ber of the Music Study Club.
She has been president of
the Club twice, and several
times chairman of its scholar-.
ship committee . which has
aided more than 300 young
musicians at special Music
Study Club annual presenta-
tions and with scholarships.
