NCJW Throughout U.S. Boosts Aid to Incoming Soviet Jews
El Al Pilots Decline to Help Air Force
NEW YORK — In airports
across the United States,
there is a scene that has be-
come fairly common in re-
cent months: a plane lands
with Russian immigrants,
there is frantic discussion in
Russian or Yiddish about
relatives not seen in decades,
and finally, after customs
and immigration procedures,
there occurs a joyful, tearful,
emotion-charged reunion.
There are other dramas for
these immigrants—less pub-
licized and less emotional —
but no less important. There's
the first job interview, the
first trip on public transpor-
tation, the first shopping ex-
pedition to a suburban super-
market — all the brief scenes
of daily living that add up
to the drama of resettlement
. . . and to make these
scenes run smoothly, Na-
tional Council of Jewish
Women has geared itself for
action.
In NCJW's Greater Miami
Section the volunteers work
in teams to provide transpor-
tation, translate, seek out
housing, collect Welcome
Wagon packages from local
merchants and make friendly

buff created a stir in mili-
tary circles.
The El Al pilots justified
their attitude on grounds
that the government may de-
cide to use military pilots on
the Boeing jet in case of an
El Al pilot strike.
The commander of Israel's
air force issued a categor-
ical denial, explaining that
the army already owns Boe-
ing aircraft, and his pilots
need additional experience
which they could obtain by
participating in El Al com-
mercial flights.

JERUSALEM — Israel can
not produce enough lemons
to meet growing demand,
which is good news for the
troubled economy.
The Jerusalem Post re-
ported that the Israelis are
trying to increase the amount
of land devoted to the grow-
ing of lemons, especially in
the Negev where output is
twice that of Israel's central
and southern regions.
A $1.2 million packing plant
was recently opened in the
Negev.
Israel's two main lemon
customers are Yugoslavia
(400,000 crates) and Romania
(300,000 crates).

In cooperation with United
HIAS and the local Jewish
social service agencies such
volunteer resettlement teams
now operate in more than 20
NCJW Sections across the
country. These volunteers, in
metropolitan centers from
Los Angeles to Teaneck, N.J.
are trained by their own
NCJW leadership, as well as
by the local social service
agency. (In Houston, Texas,
the Jewish Family Service
publishes a training guide
called "From Kiev to How-
boys.")
Training includes "Phi-
losophy of a good resettle-
ment," "importance of con-
fidentially," "the relation-
ship between volunteer and
refugee," and "how to evalu-
ate progress," all designed
to refine the volunteer's in-
nate sensitivity to cultural
differences.
But in spite of the spe-
cialized training, to call these
volunteer resettlement ser-
vices "new" would be ironic,
for NCJW's involvement with
immigrants dates back to its
inception 81 years ago. In
1903, the United States Gov-
ernment asked NCJW's as-
sistance in meeting the dif-
ficulties created by the
greatly increased immigra-
tion.
New York Section of NCJW
had created a Port and Dock
service, and tried to meet
every incoming girl at Ellis
Island, providing her with
immediate, shelter and cloth-
