THE DETROIT J EWISH NEWS A FEATURE SUPPLEMENT sponsored b TARBUTH FOUNDATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF HEBREW CULTURE PORTFOLIO OF THE PRESENT A Pledge to Hebrew and a Vow for Zion by the 11 year old Chaim Weizmann Upon the Weizmann Centennial now observed throughout the entire Jewish world, a precious letter written by the eleven year old Chaim to his Hebrew teacher Shlomo Sokolovsky, de- serves special attention. The teacher had kept the letter for many years and finally sent a photo copy of it to the already famous Dr. Weizmann. Written in Hebrew, the boy's pledge to remain loyal to "our sacred tongue and to the teachings of our sages," and his vow "let us go ... to Zion" are as touching as they are already characteristic of the youngster's leadership traits. The letter with its postscript is preserved in the Weizmann Archives in Rehovoth and repro- duced and translated in Volume I of the "Letters and Papers of Chaim Weizmann," published under the auspices of the Weizmann Memorial Foundation by Oxford University Press. Signs of the Time: CALLING' ALL MEN ... An order from the Draft Board to those previously exempt from service. My teacher and guide, R.- Shlomo Sokolovsky, How very glad I was to receive the precious letter which came to me from you, and how very pleased to have your greetings to me in that letter. In answer to your letter, which is more precious to me than any wealth, I would reply that I shall observe your corn- mand not to throw away behind me our sacred tongue and the teachings of our sages of blessed memory because I am bound to study the Hebrew language. And please, my dear teacher, do not imagine that when I attend the Gymnasium I shall throw off the garb of Judaism. No! On no account. I have determined in my heart to observe Judaism and I shall oppose the opinion of those who say that one becomes a doctor because he casts off_ his faith. This is contrary to culture and to civilisation. Can such a one be called `aristo-crat' ? to cast his faith behind his back. If that be so, woe to you, `aristo', that they who follow your: opinion should act in this way !-My brother Feivel is now at home and is not doing any work and is also not studying at all. Because by this we can rescue our exiled, oppressed brethren who are scattered in all corners of the world and have no place where to put up their_ tents, and all will attack us and the Jewis a burden on all the nations and on all the Kings of EurOpe in general and on the Bing of Russia in particular, and this may become the 'BEGINNING OF REDEMPTION'. Therefore we must support this esteemed society and we must also thank all the supporters of this society such as Dr. Yasinovsky and Dr. FINSKER and all who have , rallied beneath the flag of this society. We must also thank the two patriots who are MOSHE MONTEFIORE AND ROTHSCHILD. In conclusion we must support this society which understands what lies before it and sees the evil threatening us, therefore the obligation rests upon us to establish a place to which we can flee for help -. Since in America, where enlightenment 'prevails, we will be beaten. And in all the countries of Africa in general and the State of Morocco in particular we will be beaten and we will not be pitied. -Let us carry our banner TO ZION AND RETURN TO OUR FIRST MOTHER UPON WHOSE KNEES WE WERE BORN. For why should we look to the Kings of Europe for compassion that they should take pity upon us and give us a resting-place ? In vain ! All have decided : THE JEW MUST DIE, but England will nevertheless haire mercy upon us: In con- clusion to Zion !-Jews-to Zion ! let us go. i Chaim Weizmann nulin 11'21 "one of the most amusing, enjoyable and convincing films."
