T h e Detroit appearance
Sunday of the Harlem Globe-
trotters basketball team re-
vives interest in the late
founder of the clowning black
basketball players, Abe Sa-
perstein.
Sportswriter Red Smith re-
calls that Saperstein was the
heart and soul of the Globe-
trotters. He made all the
team arrangements, did pro-
motion and advertising work,
took care of travel .arrange-
ments and all the other jobs
required of their barnstorm-
ing trips throughout the coun-
try.
More often than not the
team would drive all day to
play a game in a small local
high school or armory gym.
With the announcement that
the Black Athletes Hall of
Fame will add Saperstein's
name in March, Smith re-
calls an incident that hap-
pened in Atlanta long ago.
After making sure his team
had been properly cared for
in a black hotel, Saperstein
started to go to sleep, only to

be awakened by two plain-
clothes policemen.
They forced him to pack
up and move to a white hotel,
after they refused to listen to
his pleas and protests.
"Those guys just wouldn't
listen," Saperstein said. "An-
ti-Semitic, I guess.'

JERUSALEM — The small

persons, most of them of
North African origin, re-
frains from open pro-Zionist
and Jewish activities, "and is
afraid of its own shadow," an

The man, who has business
relations with Max Mazin, un-
til a year ago the head of the
Madrid community, said that
since Mazin resigned, Jew-
ish community leaders care-
fully avoid any 'action that
could be interpreted as too
bold, despite a mostly sympa-
thetic public opinion.
The Israeli, who said he
was speaking on behalf of
Mazin, said that despite the
friendly attitude towards
Jews, many Jews limit them-
selves to purely religious ac-
tivities. Even during the Yom
Kippur War they did not-dare
come out in favor of Israel,
he charged.
The Israeli, who asked to
remain anonymous, cited as
an example for the deterior-
ating situation the fact that
several publications of a bul-
letin published by "Amistad,"
a Judeo-Christian organiza-
tion, were not circulated af-
ter they had been published
because one of them includ-
ed reactions to Nazi activi-
ties in Spain, and the other
condemning the UNESCO de-
cision on Jerusalem.
Most of the members of
"Amistad" a r e non-Jews,
who supported the publica-
tionS, but gave in to pres-
sures by the community's
Rabbi Benito Garzon, and the
community's public relations
director, Samuel Toledano.
The two, the Israeli charged,
explained their opposition to
t h e publications on the
grounds that they were too
"political."
The speaker said that al-
though Mazin is considered
influential in both Jewish and
non-Jewish circles, he has
not been able to convince the
present leaders of the Jewish
community to change their
stand. "When one attends Ma-
drid Jewish assemblies, one
feels the air of the 19th Cen-
tury," the man said.
