NEW YORK—"The coming
Bicentennial celebration will
offer the United States a
unique opportunity to achieve
self-understanding by learn-
ing from — and labout — the
many minorities which have
contributed to the social and
cultural' fabric of our democ-
racy." According to Newton
N. Minow, former chairman
of the Federal Communica-
tions Commission, this learn-
ing can be achieved by means
of tape, cassettes, closed cir-
cuit and cable television, and
the like.
In an address marking his
installation as chairman of
the board of overseers of The
Jewish Theological Seminary
of America, Minow called
upon his fellow overseers to
cooperate in a large scale ef-
fort to distribute to schools,
to religious organizations, to
clubs and social groups, au-
thentic information stout the
Jewish experience in Ameri-
ca.
Minow was installed as
chairman of the 300-member
board at its regular winter
meeting by Sol M. Linowitz,
his predecessor in the post,
who is now chairman of the
seminary's board- of direc-
tors. The seminary has long
been interested ii the mass
media, serving as co-produc-
er with the National Broad-
casting Company of the
"Eternal Light" on radio and
television, and. with the
American Broadcasting Corn-
pany, of "Directions" on tel-
evision.

new Jewish Studies Area pro-
gram has been established at
Washington .University, ac-
cording to Rabbi Steven
Schwarzschild, professor _ of
philosophy and Judaic stu-
dies.
Dr. Schwarzschild said stu-
dents will be able to choose
.from courses in the Hebrew
language and literature, clas-
sical medieval and modern
Jewish history, Jewish phil-
osophy and culture, and va-
rious Jewish entities in the
ancient world, Eastern and
Central Europe and the Near
East.
He said that the Jewish
studies will be taught from
the point of view of the role
of the Jews and Jewish cul-
ture "in the progress of lib-
eral values in the world at
. arge," an approach which he
aid would be a focus differ-

studies programs in other
schools.
