Israel Penalized in Sports

When things go awry in
Israel they go bad all the
way. In addition to its politi-
cal problems, the country has
been severely penalized in
the various sports areas in
the past few months.
Not too long ago the Is-
raelis were thrown out of the
Asian Soccer Federation at
the instigation of the Arab
League. The latest bit of by-
play so far as Israel and its
sports opponents are con-
cerned, is the refusal of sev-
eral European Cup basket-
ball teams to play the Israelis
in the championship tourna-
ment starting early next year..
In the matching of clubs,
which is determined by a lot-
tery which the Federation
International Basketball As-

nich, Bulgaria and Hungary
refused to be matched in the
same bracket with Israel.
The Austrian delegate in-
sisted that his country's five
should not be grouped toge-
ther because "Austria has
enough trouble with' the Ar-
abs and the situation with the
Israelis is very complicated
and costly."
Although no representation
was present from. Russia at
the lottery drawing, there
was no indication evinced
that the Soviet Union would
not play against Israel's
champions, the Maccabiah
Tel Aviv 5. The Russian's
best club is the Red Army
CSK who have been drawn as
the Maccabiah team's oppo-
sition in the home and home
competition.
