Tourism to Israel
Losing Its Appeal
TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The
government's announcement
that, due to its recent deval-
uation of the pound, Israel
has become one of the . 'most
attractive countries for tour-
ism is proving to be base-
less, according to Ha'aretz.
The newspaper states that,
owing to the galloping infla-
tion, the purchasing power
of the dollar is now even
smaller than it was before
the devaluation of the cur-
rency. Added to that is the
high cost of travel.
Ha'aretz argues that while
it may not be possible to re-
verse the runaway inflation,
there could be a solution to
the high cost of travel, name-
ly by offering. charter flights
from America and Europe,
as • is the practice of Egypt,
Greece, Jordan and Leb,anon.
It is estimated that such an
arrangement would reduce
the cost of air travel to and
from Israel by one third.

Push National Unity
JERUSALEM (ZINS) — A
conflict developed within gov-
ernment circles as a result
of a new petition by aca-
demicians calling for the for-
mation of a government of
national unity to include the
opposition party Likud.
Hundreds of intellectuals
and university professors en-
dorsed the petition, which
was presented to Premier
Yitzhak Rabin. The ' row
within government circles
occurred when Minister of
Information, Aharon Yariv,
signed the petition. Yariv
was publicly rebuked by
Premier Rabin, who declared
that "a government minister
has no right to behave in
this fashion."
