OBITUARIES
Humorist Harry Hershfield, 89
NEW YORK-Harry Hersh-
field, humorist, raconteur
and cartoonist, died Sunday
at age 89.
Born in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, the son of immigrant
parents, Mr. Hershfield went
on to become one of the na-
In the 1940's, Mr. Hersh-
field had a popular radio
show, "Can You Top This?"
for which listeners sent in
jokes to be read on the air.
Mr. Hershfield and his fel-
low joke tellers, Joe Laurie
Jr., and "Senator" Ed Ford
would tell anecdotes in the
same general category and
gauge the audience response
on a "laughmeter."
Mr. Hershfield began his
career as a toastmaster in
Chicago where he presided
at a farewell banquet for a
newspaper artist. Since that
time he was asked to preside
at various functions while
developing a repertory of
jokes.
As a cartoonist, Mr. Hersh-
field originated comic strips
with characters such as
Homeless Hector and Des-
perate Desmond. When he
moved to New York, he
created a comic strip, "Abie
the Agent" who spoke in
Yiddish orthography.
Mr. Hershfield also wrote
many articles for magazines.
He had a weekly humor
column for the New York
Daily Mirror.
He contributed his time,
energy and funds to many
charities including youth
causes in the U.S. and Israel.
One of his favorite charities
was the McCosker-Hershfield
Cardiac Home in Hillburn,
N.Y., which he founded in
1946 with Alfred J. McCosker,
then the chairman of the
Mutual Broadcasting Co.
