October War Book Discusses
New Relationship Between Jews

(Copyright 1974, JTA, Inc.)

The statement that since
the Yom Kippur War world
Jewry has been united as
never before has been made
so often that it has become
almost a cliche. Yet there is
no denying that the shock of
the Egyptian and Syrian
attack in October 1973 had a
traumatic effect on Jews
everywhere, drawing them
closer together. This has
been intensified by the
events since the war which
have left Jews with the feel-
ing that Jews everywhere,
not just in Israel„ are under
attack and in danger.
Even before the attack
there was much discussion
about the need for a new re-
lationship between Israel and
the Diaspora. But the Yom
Kippur War gave necessity
and perhaps the beginning of
the realization of this new
relationship, one which is
based on a partnership be-
tween Jews everywhere be-
cause they share a common
fate.
This is the central the&
of "The Yom Kippur War:
Israel and the Jewish
People," (Arno Press) edited
by Moshe Davis, head of the
Institute of Contemporary
Jewry and Stephen S. Wise,
professor in American His-
tory and Institutions, both at
the Hebrew University in
Jerusalem.
The book is not about the
Yom Kippur. War itself but
Jewish reaction to the war.
It provides an area survey
of the response of Jewish
communities to the war, the
reactions of Jewish and non-
J e w i s h •. intellectuals, re-
sponses to the new Jewish
condition, and personal inter-
views with Jews from vari-
ous parts of the world on
their immediate feelings
when the war broke out.
Much of what is in the
articles describing the re-
actions of the various Jewish
communities is known to the
informed reader. In fact,
Daniel J. Elazar, professor
of political science at Bar
Ilan and Temple Universi-
ties, who write the chapter
on the United States, mainly
used data from the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency, the
Anglo-Jewish press and
major Jewish organizations.
However, it is important to
have this information col-
lected in a single volume.
The heart of the book is
the various comments on in-
tellectual response to the war
and how to -deal with the
conditions now facing Jewry.
Most of the contributors find
that many intellectuals, are
at the least bored with the
problem of Israel or at the
most hostile because of the
current fashion of enamour
for the so-called Third World.
One problem with much of
the views expressed in the
book is that many contribu-
tors seem to feel that any
.disagreement with basic Is-
raeli policy is a sign of being
anti-Israel.

uate student who attempts
to explain the views of Jew-
ish,youth in England and the
U.S.
Prof. Davis, in a conclud-
ing chapter, says that all of
Israel Jews are part of one
family. He suggests that
world Jewish planning should
take into account that most
Jews will live outside of
Israel; that Israel has a role
to play in the development of
a continuing Diaspora and
world Jewish communities
have a responsibility to help
shape the Jewish future in
Israel; Israel should help
open up avenues for identi-
fication for marginal Jewish
communities; Jewish educa-
tion for Jews everywhere is
mandatory and that the high-
est function for the Diaspora
and Israel is to emphasize
and encourage aliya.
