Burundi Horror Adds Little to Genocide Solution Hopes

The book is written from
the diplomatic point of view,
and deals little with the his-
tory of the tribal frictions
and distrust which have led
to periodic wholesale slaugh-
ter among the two groups of
Africans.
In his book, Ambassador
Melady places part of the

He argues that with ,better
communications, and our
knowledge of past genocide
we can halt such tragic epi-
sodes in the human experi-
ence.
It is inconceivable that a
man with U.S. ambassadorial
rank can be as misguided as
his book makes Melady ap-
pear to be.
The world has lived through
many of these situations, and
the U.S•. experience in Viet-
nam, the Nazi Holocaust and
the problems in Ireland to-
day show what the world will
do in these situations . • •
nothing!

To believe that world opin-
ion can be marshalled, that
humane reasoning will over-
come political expediency is
to live too close to Utopia,
and a bit too far from reality.

THINK

Not only does the book
fail in presenting an answer
to genocide, it also fails to
fully explain the Burundi
situation. Melady only tells
the reader what he saw dur-
ing his three years in Bur-
undi, and gives a partial, but
inadequate in light of the
book's other failings, history
of the Burundi situation.

Old Foe May Hinder Levi's
Chance at Cabinet Nomination

WASHINGTON — Edward
H. Levi's chances of being
nominated as the next United
States attorney general have
`nose-dived badly," informed
sources on Capitol Hill'say,
since Levi has failed to win
needed support from an old
foe, Sen. James 0. Eastland,
(D.-Miss.), chairman of the
Senate Judiciary Committee.
News sources ,say Eastland
told President Ford privately
that he would not back the
nomination of Levi, president
of the University of Chicago.
Without the support of
Eastland, it is unlikely that
President Ford can win Sen-
ate confirmation for Levi,
wlfn would replace Atty. Gen.
William B. Saxbe.
With the start of the new
Congress next month, Vast-
land will become the Senate's
most senior member. He
heads the committee which
must approve Saxbe's re-
placement.

land and Levi goes back 19
years, sources say. At that
time there was a showdown
in a Senate Judiciary Sub-
committee chamber when
Levi was asked if he had ties
to organizations 'and indivi-
duals who allegedly were
linked to Communist-inspired,
un-American activities.
