Comedian Disgraces Temple
This letter was received by

of an entertainer's remarks
at a recent synagogue func-
tion.
Editor, The Jewish News:
Last weekend something
disgraceful occurred in one
of our local synagogues. Da-
vid Steinberg, a name to be
remembered for his infamy,
was the perpetrator.
This so-called "comedian"
came to Temple Beth El Sat-
urday evening to be a part
of a program honoring a
member of the congregation
and his wife for their years
of dedicated service to Re-
form Judaism.
It was to be a joyful oc-
casion on the last night of
Hanuka, one of our happy
holidays. And, it was a very
happy evening until David
Steinberg was called on to
entertain.
So what did this son of
Orthodox Jewish parents do?

He proceeded to profane the for the sensitivities of the
synagogue with a monologue people there stamps him as
of vulgarity comprising sick an arrogant fool who de-

According to some com-
mentaries (Maimonides), the
act of prayer is demanded by
the Bible.
He derived this from the
commandment in which the
Bible said that we are to serve
the Almighty with our hearts.
The Talmud (Taanit 2:A)
interprets this commandment
to mean prayer, which is re-
garded as "the service of
the heart."
Some commentaries say that
while prayer in general is
required by the Bible, spe-
cific prayers and specific
times and occasions, are
mandated by the rabbis. The
question, then, remains why
God commanded us to pray.
After all, He knows our
needs and our wants.
Many answered this ques-
tion by saying that man prays
to God for his own sake.
First of all, prayer makes
man believe that we can al-
ways turn to someone in dis-
tress. Secondly, the exercise
of prayer is actually a form
of debate with the Almighty
which makes a man reflect
on his own record in an effort
to either convince himself
that he is worthy or to make
himself worthy by promising
to better himself,
Prayer is also a form of
sacrifice. Man sacrifices his
pride by admitting through
prayer that he is helpless and
has to come to the aid of the
Almighty. Also, man, in the
course of prayer, establishes
almost a face-to-face rela-
tionship with ' the Almighty.
He convinces himself, first,
that he is not ,alone, and sec-
. ondly, that the Almighty is
not beyond his reach. Prayer
has been sometimes consid-
ered the ladder which con-
nects the Almighty above
with the man below.
It also is a horizontal chain
which unites man with his
fellow man since basic prayer
asks for help for all amen and
not for the worshiper alone.
Prayer, is actually the verbal
expression of the physical
and emotional sacrifice which
life requires.
