Committee Formulates Plans for Coinmunal Anniversaries
Preparations are under
way to commemorate the
50th anniversary of the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation and
the 75th year of the United
Jewish Charities founding.
Activities for the dual cele-
bration are being organized
by the joint anniversary cele-
bration committee under the
leadership of chairman Mrs.
Phillip R. Marcuse and asso-
ciate chairman George M.
Stutz.
The Jewish Welfare Feder-
ation is Detroit's central Jew-
ish communal organization.
Its 16 local member ag-
encies provide a variety of
community relation's, educa-
tion, and health and welfare
programming and services.
Federation's major fund-
raising effort is the Allied
Jewish Campaign - Israel
Emergency Fund, whose pro-
ceeds benefit nearly 50 local,
national and overseas human-
itarian agencies, among them
the United Jewish Appeal.
UJC was one of the first
civic associations in the
United States to coordinate
Jewish fund-raising and social
services and programming.
Created in 1899, the Charities
was the predecessor organi-
zation to Federation and one
of its founders. Today, as
senior member to Federa-
tion, UJC holds and Super-
vises communal properties,
bequests and endowment
funds, and provides funding
for agency research and pro-
gram development.
"The committee is planning
activities which we hope will
interest the general commun-
ity," said Mrs. Marcuse.
"The dual anniversaries pro-
vide an opportunity to reflect
on the progress of Detroit's
Jewish community as it inter-
twines with the metropolitan
area's history."

Envoy Tells. Israel
`Don't Leave UN'
NEW YORK (JTA)—Am-
bassador Shabtai Rosenne, a
member of Israel's perma-
nent delegation to the United
Nations, characterized his
country's position in t h e
world organization as on a
front line but said Israel
should not abandon it.
Addressing t h e annual
meeting of the American
Jewish League for Israel, a
national non-party Zionist
organization, Rosenne said
that it was in Israel's inter-
ests to bring the justice of
its cause to the attention of
the world opinion and to re-
main in the UN despite the
fact that the General As-
sembly is overwhelmingly
stacked against it.
He said that although "the
irresponsible action of the
General Assembly in accord-
ing recognition to a mass
murder group is an encour-
agement to extremism, we
are doing our utmost to re-
main on the road of peace
and moderation and, we
hope, eventual reconcilia-
tion."
Judge Seymour R. Levine,
of Peekskill, N.Y., was
unanimously elected presii
dent a the American Jew-
ish League for Israel. Elea-
zer Lipsky was re-elected
chairman of the executive
committee, and Samuel Roth-
berg, chairman of the board
of directors.
The committee's first proj-
ect is a display which in-
cludes reproductions of orig-
inal documents and minutes
from both Federation and
UJC as well as photos of or-
iginal Federation agency
sites. The display will be
changed from time to time
and stationed at various lo-
cations throughout the met-
ropolitan area in the coming
year.
JWF and Charities recently
received national recognition
for their years of service.
The Dettoit delegation to the
general assembly of the
Council of Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds in Chi-
cago accepted a specially
engraved menora in honor
of their "diamond" anniver-
sary.
