GNP in Territories
Double Since '68
TEL AVIV - The Israel
Central Bureau of Statistics,
in a review of economic
trends in the administered
Arab territories, reported
that output in the West Bank
and Gaza Strip areas doubled
in the period between 1968
and 1973.
The bureau listed the Gross
National Product in 1973 at
more than IL 1 billion, double
the GNP level of 1968. Half
of ;the GNP growth rate was
attributed to an increase in
the gross local product jobs
in Israel.
Private• consumption in-
creased by an average of 12
percent per year from 1968
and totaled IL 1.,750 per
capita in 1973, 50 per cent
higher than the level of per
capita consumption in 1968.
In % Jodea and Samaria, a '6.5
per - cent decrease
tINP
was recorded in 1973 follow-
ing a 23 per cent increase in
1972. The decrease was caus-
ed by a 28 per cent decline
in agriculture production, a
deceleration in the growth of
incomes from jobs held in
Israel and the Yom Kippur
War.
In the Gaza Strip and
North Sinai areas the GNP
more than doubled between
1968 and 1973 to IL 745,000,-
000. Its growth was attributed
to growth in local industries
and growth 'in incomes from
jobs in Israel. The number
of workers in Gaza increased
from 1,000 in 1969 to 22,000
in 1973. Private per capita
consusption also doubled dur-
ing the five-year period.
NY Mayor Hit
for Rabbi's Job
NEW YORK - Austerity
moves in the New York city
government have brought
some criticsm of • the ad-
ministration of Mayor Beame
for the mayor's appointment
last April of a rabbi affili-
ated with the mayor's syna-
gogue in Crown Heim,
Brooklyn.
Rabbi David Haymovitz
was appointed to a $32,000
City ,post at the city's Hu-
man Resources Administra-
tion, taking the place of a
rabbi appointed under the
Lindsay administration.
The appointment was ap-
proved by the city's Board
of Ethics, but city union
leaders contend that the
mayor should lay-off ap-
pointees like Rabbi Haymo-
vitz before cutting back sani-
tation workers and other low
paying positions.
