• LETTER BOX Yeshiva Education Applauded Editor, The Jewish News: I recently read an article in an Israeli newspaper in which the writer supported a single educational system which will include religious and secular education in all of Israel for all children, in- stead of a' general school system for children of non- religious homes, and special schools geared to the speci- fic needs of the various de- grees and factions in reli- gious Jewry. . To my mind this proposal would,_ destroy the very foundations of Yiddishkeit and hinder the forces which MICHAEL KAPUT Photographi Weddings • BarMitzvai' 642-1039 • NOW AVAILABLE FOR YOUR HAPPY OCCASION • Bar Mitzva • Wedding • Banquet, Etc. Secondly, any compromise system would have to be watered down to meet all parties and would satisfy none while trying to satisfy all. , - I maintain that the Yeshiva which stresses, from stu- dent's earliest years, the value and significance of Torah as the very life-blood of Judaism, and the import- ance of staying with it:as a career as well as a way of life, I say that such Yeshi- vas are the ones fulfilling their mission and purpose in the perpetuation of Torah Judaism. – My greatest satisfaction was experienced whenever I observed nursery schools and kindergartens, whether es- tablished in, America or in Israel, whiCh started the children on the right foot and the basis was firmly set in them for a lifetime of Torah-true Jewish practice. STEPHEN KLEIN Board Chairman, Barton Candy, New York * * * `Hanuka — Occasion to- Show Confidence in Israel Survival' Editor, The Jewish News:. It is well that at the time when we usher in-the holiday of Hanuka - we , should en- shrine the valor of the an- cient Maccabees and of the modern Israelis in the words of the liturgy, "Thou hast avenged our vengence, hast delivered the strong to the weak, the many to the few; , the wicked to the righteous". The miracle of Israel's tri- , umphant march toward be- coming the most powerful small-nation in the world today, accomplished in a comparative speck of the vast canvas of history's time-table, is no less attribu- table to the _intercession of the Keeper of Israel than the miracle we observe on- Hanu- ka. In much of the publicity dealing with the situation in Israel, there appears to be a tendency at morbidity, at a quaking apprehension of the consequences of the threats posed to our state. There is a Hebrew saying; Al . Tiftochu _-Pe Lasoton, which the late Fred Butzel, who was some time given to using Hebrew expressions, paraphrased: 'do -not paint the devil, lest he come to life. By His- grace, Israel will endure and continue from strength to strength, and let us in the Diaspora, doing our full duty by our state, look _forward to participating in Israel's triumphant march to peace, security and right eous power. M. MANUEL MER-ZON Unsanitary Jewish Bakeries Hit Editor, The Jewish News: Some time ago, after read- ing about a $500 fine being imposed on a local Jewish baker for unsanitary condi- tions, I switched to another. Now that bakery has been closed for unsanitary condi- tions. I feel that it is time for the Detroit Jewish community to do something regarding the shameful conditions existing in some of our Jewish bakeries. When our families say a blessing over the halla, we have every right to expect that only the cleanest ingre- dients will be used, especially in a place of \business being supported through the loyalty of their Jewish neighbors. Therefore,, when a bakery is closed because of many violations, not the least of which was selling baked goods containing rat-infested ingredients, I don't think it is right that no one knows about it.' Violations are paid off, or a sign is put up — "closed for alterations" with- Out anyone being the wiser. MRS. HARRY L. JACOBS Editor's Note: The names of the bakeries referred to by Mrs. Jacobs have been deleted' because the Oakland County . Health Department confirmed that the bakeries involved have corrected de- ficiencies and brought their establishments up to stand- ard. However, a check of the department's records -of Jew- ish, bakeries in Oak Park and Southfield indicate that the department inspects only once • Orchestras • Entertainment • Speakers • Concerts Downtown Detroit - 962-8000 Wear your learning like your watch, in a private poc- ket, and do not pull it out and strike it merely to show that you have one.—Chester- field per year, and that several hakeries haVe been ordered, yearly to conduct a general cleaning, store foodstuffs off the floor, repair' refrigera- tors and tables, and correct other violations.
