Germans." Police said they,

The letters said, "A beast
lives and works in your neic,
borhood who has committ d
immense crimes on the best
representatives of the Aryan
race. We are determined to
kill him as we did other crim-
inals and will do in the fu-
ture. You permitted this vil-
lain to work in your neigh-
borhood, Nit as you are Ar-

yans we only want_ to warn
you that because you live in
the same building as Wiesen-
thal you could also be blown
up•"
Wiesenthal, who has re-
ceived countless anonymous
threats to his life since he
started tracking down wanted
Nazi war criminals after
World War II, said he would
"continue hunting Nazi crimi-

"dreidel" (a four-sided top),
a still popular game which
began in the early Middle
Ages.
The four sides were mark-
ed with the Hebrew letters
Nun, Gimmel, He, Shin,
standing for Yiddish words
"Nimm, Gib, Halb, Shtell,"N
meaning "take, give half,
and put."
The letters were later in-
terpreted as standing for the
Hebrew "Nes Gadol Hayah
Sham" (a great miracle hap-
pened there). In modern Is-
rael the last word was chang-
ed to "Po," so as to read: a
great miracle happened here.
The hymn sung, in the
Ashkenazi ritual, after the
kindling of the. Hanuka lights,
is Ma'oz Zur, "0 Fortress,
Rock (of my salvation)."
The song originated in Ger-
many, probably in the 13th
century; the author is - an
otherwise unknown poet by
the name of Mordecai as
shown by the acrostic of the
first five stanzas.
The most commonly sung

"escape" for you. Fun, food,

Hanuka (like Purim) is a
festival of celebration, spec-
ial foods, and fun filled
games.
According to the Encyclo-
paedia Judaica, H a n u k a
dishes symbolize historical
events connected with the
festival. Jews of all commun-
ities eat pastry and potato
preparations fried in oil as a
reminder of the cruse of oil
at. the rededication of the
Temple.
Ashkenazim called them
"latkes," and they have dif-
ferent names among Sephar-
diin and oriental Jews. Thus
the "sufganiyot" (doughnuts)
of Hanuka, eaten in Israel,
and the levivot" (latkes)
have a long tradition.
A popular East European,
salad of this festival is the
"retekh salat" of radish, tur-
nip, olives, and onions, and
onions fried in goose fat with
"grivn" (cracklings), all the
ingredients having been_pop-
ular in the Maccabean era.
