Dr. and Mrs. Peter A.
Martin of Southfield' may
have been the catalyst for the
release of Dr. and Mrs. Vladi-
Mir ievit and their daughter
from the USSR.
Mrs. Martin received a
letter last • week from the
Levits in Italy. The Levits
have been trying to leave
Russia since March 1973
when they were denied exit
visas and dismissed from
their jobs.
Dr. Levitt is .a psychiatrist,
and his wife a physician.
Mrs. Martin's friend, Mrs.
Myron Joyrich of the Detroit
Committee for Soviet Jewry,
put the Martins in touch with
the Levits in April 1974.
Mrs. Martin sent several
checks to the Levits to keep

them from becoming desti-
tute and being jailed as
"parasites."
Dr. Levit h a d formerly
been employed by the psy-
chiatry institute of the Aca-
demy of Medical Sciences of
the USSR.
D u r i ng the last eight
months, Mrs. Martin received
a number of censored 'letters
from the family, including
17-year-old Lina. The corres-
pondence indicated only faint
hope that the family would
be allowed to leave the
Soviet Union.
Last week, the Martin's
had a houseguest who has
dealt with Soviet authorities
on the emigration of profes-
sionals. The guest, Dr. Cor-
nelia Wilbur, of Kentucky,
predicted that the Levits
would be releaSed because
Dr. Martin is a noted psychia-
trist, and the Soviet !authori-
ties would not keep anyone
who h a s received letters
from prominent people.
Dr. Wilbur's prophecy
came true only a few days
later.
The Levits wrote from
Rome that they would like to
emigrate to the United States,
and asked Dr. Martin to in-
vestigate potential job oppor-
,
tunities.
Dr. Martin found. that Dr.
Levit can take: an examina-
tion in Rome that will help
qualify him -for U.S. positions,
and he is investigating jab'
opportunities in, this country.
Mrs. Martin was delighted
at the news of the -Levits' re-
lease,, but credits the-work of
Mrs. Joyrich- and other mem-
bers of the Detroit Commit-
-tee for Soviet Jewry. "They
are the ones who have
worked'so hard," she said.
