Peace-nik Deported from Beirut

The Federation of Amer-
ican Syrian-Lebanese Clubs,
claiming to represent 500,000
Midwest Arab-Americans and
85,000 Detroiters, has called
on the U.S. to recognize the
Palestine Liberation Organi-
zation as the official spokes-
man for Palestinian refugees
in the Middle East.
The group held its annual
mid-winter board meeting in
Detroit last weekend.
Minor George, president of
the group, said that the U.S.
has withheld its recognition
"despite United Nations rec-
ognition of the PLO."
He said the group also
adopted resolutions protest-
ing Israeli bombing of Leba-
non and cited Canadian.. and
South American oil as more
expensive- than Arab oil.

Able S. Nathan; self-styled Istaeli peace envoy, was
arrested and deported from Beirut, Lebanon, last week
several hours after arriving there from Paris. Nathan,
who for eight years has conducted a personal campaign for
Israeli-Arab reconciliation, is shown on his 'peace ship in
New York harbor in 1973.

contained in a letter to Staf-
ford from Col. Naum Olshan-

Olsiwnsky, who holds the
rank of "Hero of the Soviet
Union" suggested to Stafford-
that "if you were to say that
you could not make the plan-
ned joint space flight until a
glaring injustice is righted,
it would have an immediate
and beneficial effect."
The former Red Army of-
ficer, writing in Russian to
the American who- under-
stands the language, explain-
ed his plight.
"On 18th Aug. 1971, I and
my entire family applied for
exit visas to -go to Israel,"
he wrote. "As soon as our
applications had been hand-

ranks and deprived of my

MK Says W., Bank
Leader Needless
as Alternate to PLO -
JERUSALEM (JTA) —

Yitzhak Navon, chairman of
the foreign affairs and se-
curity, committee of the Knes-
set, ruled out the possibility .
of encouraging new Arab
leadership in the West Bank
as an alternative to the
Palestine Liberation Organi-
zation leadership of- t h e
Palestinians.
In an interview with a
Labor Party publication in
Jerusalem, Navon, an Arab-
ist and a dove, described as
unrealistic the approach that
was propagated recently by
Premier Yitzhak Rabin and
Foreign Minister Yigal Allon
to try and develop a leader-
ship in the West Bank as a
core for Palestinian repre-
sentation.
Navon agreed that there
were elements that feared a
takeover by Yasir Arafat,
'but they would not dare op-
pose him now.
