UN Destroys Key
Israel Fortification

TEL AVIV (JTA)—A key
Israeli fortificatioi left' be-
hind when .Israeli forces
evacuated the •Kuneitra re-
gion under terms of the dis-
engagement agreement was
demolished by United Na-
tions forces, who acted on
demands from Syria.
The strongpoint, known as
Position 107, was the only
one on the Golan Heights
that withstood the Syrian sur-
prise attack on Oct. 6, 1973.
It was- the last of three
former Israeli positions in the
Kuneitra buffer zone to be
destroyed in the past week.
United Nations Disengage-
ment Observer Forces said
the demolition was carried
out_ by -civilian workers. Ac-
cording to UNDOF, it com-
plied with Syria's demands
on grounds that the strong-
points could be used by Is-
raeli forces in the event of
a new war with Syria.
