TEL AVIV—Six years ago,
when the Israeli government
introduced television in Is-
rael, there was strong oppo-
sition.

would interfere with reading
books.

population does not enjoy TV.

that television would be more

But Israeli television has
stressed the negative sides of
life in Israel.
The public gets the impres-
sion that daily life in Israel
consists only of strikes, dem-

agement of the Israeli TV
and the matter was raised
also in the Israeli Parlia-
ment.
The leader of Likud, Chaim
Landau, accused the man-
agement of promoting politi-
cal factions and undermining
the morale. Minister for In-
formation Aharon Yariv an-
swered, that the Broadcast-
ing Authority is independent
according to the law. The
government has little to say
in television matters and its
influence on radio and TV is
minimal.
Likud leader Menahem Be-
gin remarked' that TV is
good, but its execution faulty.
A new incident has even
aroused the moderate writers
and critics. Israeli writer
Dan Ben-Amotz was invited
to talk about his latest book.
He is considered a hippie,
non-conformist and a man
who is against values and
tradition.
A year ago he criticized
the government for restau-
rants being closed on the
High Holidays and no bus
service on the Sabbath.
In the latest television pro-
gram "Tandu" (together)
he declared that the main
aim of each human being is

to enjoy life. Since there are
often wars in Israel and
many youngsters are killed,
he would emigrate, he said,
if he were 20 years younger.
The TV management was
severely criticized for this
interview. Several programs
have been termed cheap and
sensational, full of murder,
espionage, prostitution and
eroticism. Ben-Amotz charged
that a group of leftish Bo-
hemian circles governs Is-
raeli television. This argu-
ment led to a stormy debate.
The TV management re-
fuses to allow programs in
Yiddish, whereas the Israeli
Radio, has a daily 30-minute
Yiddish program.
Some TV programs are
very popular. "Songs of My
Country" by Dan Almagor is
especially well received. It
is a program full of nostalgia
in which the past and history
of Israel is shown by people
who lived it.
Some of them are 90 years
old. They are accompanied
by a young choir, which
sings songs of the pioneer
days.
It is hoped, that Israeli
television will respond to
constructive criticism. TV
should reflect life in Israel
and its society as it is and
not concentrate only on the
negative and sensationalap-
pearances.
