Twenty Arab Nations, Dominating With Consent
of So-Called Civilized World, Seek to Crush
Smallest of Nations as Shown in Revealing Map

Hanuka Cruse of Oil Defies Wealth-Infested Enemies of Israel

Hanuka's traditional mes-
sage of "not by might nor
by power . . . " is no longer
unchallenged. Always tem-
pered by a person's obliga-
tion to defend himself when
under attack, the new duty
to resist murderers is more
pressing than ever in his-
tory
While emphasizing faith
and the spirit of justice that
must prevail in civilized so-
ciety, Hanuka compels its
celebrants to take to the
sword in the confrontation
with the murderers.
Neither the Arabs nor
the nations of the world
who support them can ever
be forgiven for the harm
already being plotted
against the Jewish state.
A glance at the accom-
panying map_ should con-
vince even the most bigoted
of men about the inequities
of the Middle East situa-
tion.
This map,, which illustrat-
ed a U.S. State Department
brochure on "The United
States and the Middle

crush. the smallest of the
nations in the world.

East," shows the vastness
of Islamic power, the min-
uteness of Israel.
It does much more his-
torically: it serves as a re-
minder that only Jews, in
Eretz Israel, had lived in
their - ancient homeland,
never abandoning the sa-
cred soil—and even if the
Jewish residents were only
the token representatives of
their people, they, and they
alone, held fast to the lega-
cies of the ancient home-
land.
Amidst the vastness of
the area shown on this map
there is a literal pinpoint:
Israel. It may be difficult
to locate the small land, but
it is there, it is Jewish,
there is the attempt to
crush it.
The very injustice of be-
grudging Jews the right to
live,, accumulation of
venom aimed at Israel's de-
struction, place a blot on
mankind. Twenty Arab na-
tions, possess in g more
wealth oil-wise than the
rest of the world, would

The vastness of Arab
wealth as contrasted with
the rest of mankind now in
a state of submissiveness
was described here recently
by Abba Eban in the fol-
lowing -statement which re-
affirms Maccabean rejection
of dangers from enemy
ranks:
"The Arab nation of
which the Palestinians are
a part—forms 3 per cent
of the human race but it
has 16 per cent of the
votes in the United Na-
tions and a virtual hold on
30 more votes, 16 per cent
of the earth's land surface,
60 per cent of the world's
oil reserves and a vast per-
centage of its unused cur-
rency assets.

From this position of ex-
travagant privilege, some
of its leaders avariciously
pursue the elimination of
Israel as a state.

But Israel will not be
deprived of its -statehood.
It will not die, or dis-
appear, or apologize for
itself, or be swallowed up
in something else, or aban-
don its specific Jewish vo-
cation and solidarities. It
will seek peace, compro-
mise and mutual conces-
sion within the framework
of respect for its rights."
The crime •is not the
Arabs' alone. It is that of
all mankind whose greed
for oil overrules justice.
Therefore, the few in
Jewry may again be bat-
. tling the whole world. His-
torically, this will not be a
new experience. °
Traditionally, the world
infected with the cancer of
hatred will be reminded.
that the small cruse of oil
is still burning and will not
be extinguished. This is the
message of Hanuka for
Jews. It is the warning to
mankind that neither Jewry
nor Israel are destructable.

America's great poet, Em-
ma Lazarus, had an inspira-
tion for the generations -
when she appealed for the
lifting of the banner of the
Jew in an endless mark of
Jewish courage. The poem
in which she made that ap-
peal 75 years ago retains its
power and deserves its re-
petition at this time.

The Banner of the Jet.

By EMMA LAZARUS

'Wake, Israel, wake! Recall today
The glorious Maccabean rage,

The sire heroic, hoary-gray
His five-fold lion-lineage:

The Wise, the Elect, the Help-
of-God,

The Burst-of-Spring, the Aveng-
ing Rod.

From Mizpah's mountain-side
they saw
Jerusalem's empty streets, her
shrine
Laid waste where Greeks pro-
faned the Law,
With idol and with pagan sign.
Mourners in tattered black were
there,
With ashes sprinkled on their
hair.

Then from the stony peak there
rang
A blast to ope the graves: down
poured
The Maccabean clan, who sang
Their battle-anthem to the Lord,
Five heroes lead, and following
see,
Ten thousand rush to victory!
Oh, for Jerusalem's trumpet
now,
To blow a blast of shattering
power,
