The Boys in Robin's Band

Greatness of Charity

"Three suits of Lincoln
green shalt thou have a year,
beside twenty marks in fee,
thou shalt share all with us,
and lead a right merry life
in the greenwood; for cares
have we not and misfortune
cometh not upon us within
the sweet shades of Sher-
wood, where we shoot the
dun deer, and feed upon ven-
ison, and sweet oaten cakes,
and cards, and honey. Wilt
thou come with me?"
Such an offer is difficult to
refuse, especially when it's
Robin Hood's invitation to
join his merry band. For the
adventures of this brave and
generous outlaw, told and
retold for hundreds of years,
have become a legend that
is part of virtually every
childhood. The • hero of the
English yeoman, Robin Hood
was long celebrated in the
popular ballads which form-
ed the basis for the modern
storybook legend. Probably
the most famous of these
works is "The Merry Adven-
tures of Robin Hood" (Dover
paperback) by the foremost
artist and author of children's
books, Howard Pyle.

It was said about Benja-
min the Righteous, who was
a disburser of charity, that
at one time, during a famine
year, a woman appeared ask-
ing him to feed her. And he
told her: "I swear that there
is nothing in the treasury of
charity." "But Rabbi," she
rejoined, "if you will not feed
me, you will find a woman
with her seven children
dead." He then fed her from
his own pocket. At a later
time he became sick and
was almost dying, when the
ministering angels pleaded
before the Holy One, praised'
be He!, saying: "Sovereign
of the universe, Thou hast
declared that he who saves
one soul of Israel is like unto
him who has saved a whole
world; and Benjamin the
Righteous, who has saved a
woman with her seven chil-
dren, should he die in his
prime?" Immediately, the
adverse decree was torn. It
was taught in a Baraitha
that 22 years were added to
his life.

Momentum for Hebrew

By ABBA EBAN, an address
before the Rabbinical AsJ
sembly, 1952.
A close concentratioi upon
the revival of Hebrew studies
as - an essential element in
the mass life of the Ameri-
can Jewish community is an
essential prelude to our part-
nership in' any of these
spheres. If this task is ne-
glected any longer, Israel
and American Jewry will be-
come foreign to each other,
and we shall become over
shadowed and separated by
a widening gulf of alienation.
You might not notice the
gulf so much in this genera-
tion, in which Israel's cit-
izens still retain the attrib-
utes of an immigrant com-
munity. You will notice it in
the second generation which
is built upon a mono-lingual
pattern, and the day when an
American Jew, however deep
and ardent the passion of his
Zionist spirit, is a foreigner
to Israel and Israel is for-
eign to him. That terrible day
becomes imminent upon the
horizon unless somehow the
Hebrew movements in this
country can gather a far
greater momentum.

ZOA Urges U.S. Aid

NEW YORK (ZINS)—Dr.
Joseph P. Sternstein, presi-
dent of the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America, told the
ZOA National Executive
Committee meeting here, that
the U. S. must keep Israel
militarily strong and able to
repulse the threats of the
Communist-Arab Axis.
Dr. Sternstein urged the
American people to recog-
nize that the security of Is-
rael means the security of
the U.S. in the 'Middle East.

Ball Predicts Attack

The Inversions
Now appearing.

NEW YORK (ZINS) —
James Reston in the New
York Times said George Ball,
former secretary of state, has
circulated a private memo-
randum saying "Israel lost
the advantage of surprise
last October," and "is de-
termined not to let that hap-
pen again. Thus it seems to
me quite possible that the
Israelis will launch a pre-
emptive attack on Syria, and,
possibly, Egypt, early next
spring."
