Waldheim Says UN Force to Stay

JERUSALEM (JTA) — UN
Secretary General Kurt Wald-
heim said Tuesday that he
expected themandate of the
United Nations Disengage-,
meat ,Observers Force- (UN-
DOF) on the Golan Heights
to be extended.
But he did not disclose
whether he had received a
final reply from Syrian Pres-
ident Hafez Assad on that
matter. The UNDOF man-
date expires tomorrow.
The Secretary General
spoke to newsmen after a
meeting with Israel Foreign
Minister Yigal Allon shortly
after his arrival Tuesday
from Damascus. He was
scheduled to Meet with Pre-
mierYitzhak Rabin and other
Israeli officials before leav-
ing for Cairo Wednesday..
He described his two-hour
talk with Allon as "very con-
structive and I am very
pleased."
He said they had "dis-
cussed an extension of the
UN mandate as well as the
overall Middle East- situa-
tion" - and added, "I expect
the mandate will be extend-
ed in view • of my talks in
Damascus."
He said, in reply to a ques-
tion, that there would be no
change in the terms of the
mandate.
On his arrival at Ben-Gur-
ion Airport, Waldheim said
the Middle East situation
*was very serious and "we
must do everything possible
to emerge from the present
impasse." He said he hoped
his visit would contribute to
lessening tension in the re-
gion.
It was reported by the Is-
rael radio that Allon will go
to Washington next month
for talks with Secretary of
State Henry A. Kissinger.

Lubavitchers Mark
Founder's Liberation

NEW YORK (LNS)—Has-
sidic Jews will celebrate the

19th of Kislev Tuesday, the
176th anniversary of Rabbi
Schneur Zalman's release
from Czarist. prison.
Festivities will be high-
lighted at the Lubavitch
headquarters in Brooklyn,
with an address by the Luba-,
vitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Mena-
chem M. Schneerson.
To Habad-Lubavitch Hassi-
dim the 19th of Kislev is sig-
nificant because the libera-
tion, of Rabbi Zalman in-
1798 provided him the Habad
ideology and movement, and
enabled renewed promulga-
tion of Habad teachings.
,Rabbi Zalman, or Der
Alter_ Rebbe, founded the
Habad-Lubavitch movement.
He carried Hassidic teach-
ings to Jews in Russia, Po-
land and Lithuania.
