as a member of the opposi-
tion Likud Party, said in an
interview Nov,. 12 in De-
troit that the United States
must take a leading role in
preventing a new Middle
East War.
Olmert, on a one-month
U.S. tour for the Israeli gov-
ernment, said Israel is now
in a very crucial position be-
cause of the chance for war
in the Middle East.
He said, although the Arabs
are stronger than they were
at the time of the 1973 Yom
Kippur . War, Israel is also
stronger.. "But this would
be a bad time for a war for
Israel," and the Arabs might
begin a new fight in order
to inflict casualities, hurt
Israel's economy and further
her political isolation.
Olmert said Israel- would
took vulnerable in the eyes
of the Arabs if the U.S. does
not continue its strong sup-
port. "If the United . States
will tell the Arabs that it will
never desert Israel, that Is-

allow a foreign power to hurt
Israel, then the Arabs will
reconsider any war."
He said support of Israel
is in the best interest of the
U.S. He said discussions he
has had in Washington lead
him to believe that Ameri-
cans don't want to be black-
mailed by Arab oil, and that
people believe the Arabs
have "overdone it."
"We have to explain to
Americans that the oil crisis
has nothing to do with the
Middle East crisis, he said.
."If there were no _political
crisis, the Arabs would find
some other excuse to raise
prices."
He said the Arabs have
promised several times to
lower prices and have not
complied. "They do- it be-
cause they get away with
it,", he said.
"They blackmail the world
With oil, and then gain other
help from these same coun-
tries," Olmert, added, refer-
