Tales of Hasidim

The Stretiner (died 1844)
declared: "We say: 'And
mayest Thou assemble the
dispersed as one assembles
grainstalks.' Why do we not
say: 'as one assembles
pearls?' The reason is this:
when we gather assembled
pearls, we cleanse them of
all impurities and select only
those that are pure. Had we
therefore said, 'Assemble us
as pearls out of the Disper-
sion,' it would imply that we
asked only for the Redemp-
tion of the pure Zadikim.
But he who gathers grain-
stalks does so with hay cling-
ing to them. We likewise pe-
tition that we may all be re-
deemed—the ears of grain
with the haystalks, the Zad-
ikim with the ordinary
Jews."
The Tzupenester (died 1869)
found his Hasidim playing
checkers. He said: "You
may learn much wisdom
from the rules of this game.
You surrender one in. order
to capture two.. You may
not make two moves at one
time. You must move up,
not down. When you reach
the top, you may move as
you like"
