NEW YORK — More than 200 blind people participated in a tribute Thursday to the Jewish Braille Institute of America and ,the Central Synagogue Brotherhood "in appreciation of 15 years of cultural programS." Fifteen years ago, when the cultural program started, it was a program being con- ducted by sighted people for the blind. Both organizations became involved with the blind in their struggle for equality and to be accepted as creative and talented peo- ple in society on a par with the sighted. At this anniversary cele- bration, the program was onducted by blind persons who have been active in this program. Mindy Fliegelman and Stephen Cassell, the first two blind persons in Jewish history to be cantors, sang folk songs and cantorial se- lections. Rabbi Kisses Arafat at Party (Editor's note: this report was written by David Horo- witz at the UN, a forthei staff member of The Jewish Neivs.) UNITED NATIONS—Rabbi Elmer Berger, notorious for his bitter opposition to Israel as a leader of the "American Council- of Judaism," took the occasion of the Arab League reception tendered PLO head Yassir Arafat at the UN last week to embrace and kiss the terrorist • chieftain respons- ible f6r the cold-blooded murder of 'innocent Israeli children, women and men as well as an untold number of non-Jews. The reception, which took place on the -evening Arafat delivered his speech to the UN, was hosted by the Egyp- tian Ambassador Abdei Me- guid. The. U.S. boycotted the re- ception. However, France and Italy were well repre- sented while. Britain sent a :lower rank diplomat. There were few representatives from Latin America, the substance and nature of comments. The secretary also was said to have reaffirmed Brown's regrets by reading the two statements the com- mander made last week to the Jewish War Veterans and another at the Pentagon as a press statement. While-the secretary's com- ments were well received by the group as a whole,' some leaders reportedly were said' to have come away feeling that Brown's assurance's to the American people should be made more fully knoWn. After having issued a state- ment disassociating himself from 'Brown's remarks, Pres- ident Ford summoned the general to the White House last week to rebuke him per- sonally,_ but, said he would not dismiss him over "one mistake." Demands for Brown's ous- ter as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have been made by numerous Jewish organizations and members of Congress. The national executive com- mittee of the Jewish War Veterans will meet this week- end to discuss the case. The JWV has said that Brown's two statements were inadequate. Locally, the city councils of Southfield and Oak Park passed resolutions Monday condeming Brown's state- ment. The Southfield council asked President Ford to cen- sure Brown, while Oak Park called on Ford to remove the general.. Detroit News military ana- lyst Col. Robert D. Heinl said that Brown should be re- moved solely on a military basis. Heinl said Brown's comments showed a lack of judgment and inability to think under pressure. He said a lesser ranking general "guilty of such a blunder would be retired be- fore the next pay day." rfRIPPLE'l SOLE SHOES Soften the sidewalks, Shorten the miles!
