Volume Defines 'Semi.te'

The ,t e r m "Semites,"
originally referred to those
peoples listed in the table of
nations (Gen. 10) as descen-
dants of Noah's son Shem,
his five sons and their 21
descendants. -
In all, 26 peoples derived
from'him. These include the
Elamites, the Assurians, the
Lydians, the Arameans, • and
numerous Arab tribes.
According to the Encyclo-
paedia Judaica, early in the
development of modern eth
nology, is was realized that
the list in Genesis combines
peoples who often Have noth-
ing in common but geogra-
phy.
"Semite" was then defined
by the supposed physical'
characteristics of the Jews
and the Arabs. The mislead-
ing, and evil results of earlier
racial theories have led to a
_ restriction on the use of the
words Semite and Semitic so
that, today, they apply only
to linguistic categories.
Only Jews and Arabs
speak Semitic languages now,
but in ancient times the
Akkadians, the Amorites;

the Babylonians, the Phoeni-
cians and the Canaanites did
as well. (The "Hebrews" do
not appear at all in the table
of nations; it is, however,
generally supposed that Eber,
a descendent of Shem (Gen.
10:21,25) is their namesake.)
At the beginning of the
19th Century, with the
emergence of nationalistic
struggles, writers began to
distinguish between races
and to set one against the
other. This was especially
true in Germany where na-
tionalist agitators extolled
the merits and qualities of
the Teutonic race. Jews who
up to then had been included
in the white race, were now
considered as a race apart,
an Oriental one, the Ency-
clopaedia Judaica says.
A - iconfusion arose between
languages - and races, a mis-
take which had grave conse-
quences.

It was believed that the
nations who spoke 'European
languages, which were
thought to have derived from
S'anskrit, belonged to the
Indo-European or "Aryan"
race. In opposition to them
was a "Semitic" race, rep-
resented by the Jews and the
Arabs.
Progress in anthropology,
ethnagraphy, and pre-history
made most specialists gradu-
ally abandon these simplistic
conceptions. T h e "Aryan
theory" continued to gain
adherents among the general
public, however, and the anti-
Jewish sentiment, from then
on was called "anti-Semitic."
This concept implied a vague
belief in the intellectual or
moral superiority of the
the "Aryans" over the Se-
mites", with tragic conse-
quences.

A teacher who has been
giving a course on yoga and
Judaism to a synagogue Sun-
day school class has reported
that the initial skeptical at-
titude of parents changed to
strong endorsement of the
course during the three years
she has been teaching it.
Melba Krause described
her experiences in teaching
the course in a report in
Sh'ma, an independent jour-
nal which identified her as
having taught, written and
publicly expounded her
theories of yoga for many
years in the Flint area. The
class was in a Grand Blanc
synagogue.
She- reported she became
imbued with a feeling of re-
sponsibility to make "this
body of knowledge accessible
to other Jewish people."
When the rabbi and the edu-
cational director of the syn-
agogue asked her to conduct
religious school classes "in
this philosophy," she replied
she could not simplify that
philosophy for , a course on
that alone but that if it was
implemented "by other fac-
ets of Raja Yoga, it would be
feasible."
*But at that time, she said,
the rabbi and the director
"felt that to do so would be
unacceptable to the Jewish
community. A year later they
proposed that I teach the
full program." Her course is
entitled "Practical Aspects
of Jewish Mysticism, or
What's Jewish About Yoga?"
She explained that her
course __uses "mild, thera-
peutic exercises" to "counter-
act tension and reinforce phys:
ical health; and calming mo-
tivational and uplifting medi-
tation." She said shp explans
the "credibility of a develop-
ment on intuition, as - a side
effect" and that she pre-
sented "sound information on
extra-senory perception" to
"dispel unnecessary fears
and diminishing vulnerability
of damaging misinforma-
tion."
The course also includes
material from the Bible, the
Talmud, Midrash, Ethics of
the Fathers, Zohar, Kabala,

Maimonides, Albert Einstein,
Martin Buber and others,
plus use of the Conservative
and Reform prayerbooks,
"plus additional rabbinic lit-
erature." She said the course
also includes statements of •
n-e n-Jewish psychiatrists,
scientists, philosphers a n d
poets who "strengthen the
foundations of this theory."
She asserted that many
people were unaware of "the
pluralism of Jewish philos-
ophy, and of the divergent'
branches of Jewish' mysti-
cism — one being provincial
and superstitious, the other
being philosophical and sci-
entific." She declared her
course "represents an en-
deavor to elucidate the phil-
osophical and scientific seg-
ment."
She declared that "positive
responses" of the pupils to
the course "and other favor-
able publicity" had brought
"dramatic changes in the at-
titudes of former skeptics
and detractors" among the
parents.

"Our- next conference will
